What are facial cleansers and why we want to use them?
In the pursuit of maintaining healthy, young looking skin, it starts with the facial cleanser. We pamper the face with special care so it looks and feels especially good.
A facial cleanser helps keep skin clean by removing dirt, sweat, excess sebum (oils naturally produced by the skin), cosmetics, dead skin cells, bacteria, and any pollutants that come in contact with your skin.
The trick is to cleanse the skin without disturbing the skin’s natural moisture barrier and Ph balance. This requires a cleanser with a more sophisticated formulation to meet this criteria.
As with shampoos, it is often suggested to have 2 facial cleansers to meet the needs of your skin now and to alert it out of its complacent reaction to the use of the same product daily.
Makeup Gourmet offers 2 cleansers.

In classic European skin care philosophy, toner is a watery formula positioned to be the catalyst between cleanser and moisturizer. It gently follows up the cleansing and prepares the skin to accept serums and moisturizers better.
Toner is traditionally smoothed over skin on a cotton pad and more recently also comes in a spray delivery system to mist on the skin.
Toner’s importance is often under-represented and misunderstood.
It is a subtle yet highly effective way to attract and keep serums and moisturizers in the skin. This is achieved by the use of humectants. Humectants act as a sponge and attract and maintain the moisture it can absorb.
Toner, when misted on, provides a nice ‘slip’ so lotions and creams glide smoothly over the skin to penetrate more deeply and evenly.
Makeup Gourmet features 2 ‘Toners’. Quotes are used as one is more a rehydrating mist to use throughout the day, however works on the same principle.

What are moisturizers and why do we want to use them?
First and foremost, moisturizers provide a healthy balance of water and/or oil to topically hydrate skin.
Because moisturizer is applied uniformly over the entire face, it is the best place to include preventive/protective ingredients as well.
The main preventive/protective ingredients are SPF, and anti-oxidants. SPF is fundamental in preventing premature aging of the skin due to UVA/UVB damage.
Other topical corrective ingredients are alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, citric, malic) which loosen surface dead skin cells for easier exfoliation.
Also Retinol which minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, bolster skin’s thickness and elasticity, slow the breakdown of collagen (which helps keep skin firm), and lighten brown spots caused by sun exposure. Retinol is present in my Age Defying Serum because applying it first before moisturizer allows it to go deeper, have a higher concentration and thusly more effective.
A moisturizing day crème formulated with Pine Bark Extract, Aloe and Vitamins A, E, C and E. SPF helps prevent sunburn. A smoothing base for makeup. Recommended for: All skin types. Paraben free • Talc free • Lanolin free. Made in USA.

Vitamins A, C and E
Vitamin A forces your skin cells to turn over faster, bringing new fresh skin cells to the surface.
Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, slows down the aging process and even reverse the signs of aging.
Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreens help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin.
Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer. UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own.
A light easily absorbed SPF day crème formulated with Antioxidants and Extracts of White Tea and Pomegranate. This product helps protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Sun Protection. Pomegranates have sun protective compounds that protect the skin against free radical damage, help prevent skin cancer, relieve sunburn and reduce the signs of sun damage. Pomegranate seed oil works to protect against skin cancer because of ellagic acid, a polyphenol antioxidant found in large quantities in pomegranates, which researchers have found inhibits the growth of skin tumors.
3. Anti-Aging. Pomegranates protect against premature aging by helping reduce the signs of skin aging caused by sun damage and exposure, such as wrinkles and fine lines. Pomegranates also help prevent hyperpigmentation and age spots.
4. Youthful Skin. Pomegranates promote smooth, firm skin by promoting collagen and elastin production and soften skin.
5. Dry Skin. It is a great ingredient for skin care because its small molecular structure allows it to penetrates deeply into the skin. It works for most skin types, (which depends on the skin care ingredients pomegranate is combined with).
Since pomegranate oil penetrates deeply into the skin, it is effective for treating dry skin. It soothes dry, cracked and irritated skin. It contains punicic acid, an omega 5 fatty acid that hydrates and prevents moisture loss.
6. Oily Skin/Combination Skin. Pomegranate oil even works for oily skin and the use of pomegranate have been beneficial in skin care products for acne prone skin, to combat breakouts, reduce scarring and sooth minor irritations.

What are eye creams and why do we want to use them?
Eyes and lips are the special needs parts of our face. The skin tissue is dramatically thinner and the dermis layer (the middle layer) is dramatically more thin and missing conventional oil glands that lubricate the top layer of skin giving it elasticity.
As lip skin is similar to eye skin, a little eye cream goes a long way to hydrating lips.
The most important ingredient in eye cream is a highly refined oil molecule that is small enough to penetrate and lubricate the top layer of skin. Without oil, skin loses most of its elasticity and thus easily stretched.
Skin under the eyes can be prone to puffiness if fluid builds up. Because the skin is more thin and translucent, underlying veins become more prominent and dark circles can form. Heredity, lack of sleep, too much sun exposure and aging may also cause dark circles.
As with all skin care, a little every day will work its magic. This is most true for the eye area. There is no need to apply a richly emollient cream around the eye. The oil cannot absorb into the skin. A lightweight, highly refined eye moisturizer applied at least twice daily will provide the care your eye area needs (and lips).
Here is my eye moisturizer that is suitable for under makeup or alone, day and night.
Caffeine is known to stimulate cell metabolism and increase blood flow while vitamins A & C provide
anti-oxidant benefits. Also excellent for lips as the refined oil molecules in this cream penetrate the
similar thin skin tissue of the lips. Paraben free • Sulfate free • Gluten free. Made in USA.
key ingredients
Caffeine Constricts small blood vessels and reduces inflammation to minimize dark circles and puffy skin under the eyes.
Vitamins A & C

What are exfoliators and why do we want to use them?
Skin replenishes itself every 30 days. Once full grown, our body has less incentive to create skin cells at our previous growing-up rate.
Surface skin cells die but are still attached. They no longer hold water and light, and mask the brightness of the skin cells below.
The weekly removal/exfoliation of surface dead skin cells exposes the fresh living skin cells and promotes more rapid skin cell reproduction. This results in our skin behaving and looking like young translucent skin.
The instruction and advice I share with anyone who wants to exfoliate is this.
It is important to understand why this simple and inexpensive activity promotes younger looking skin.
By gently and consistently removing the build-up of surface dead skin cells, our body responds by making fresh new skin cells at a more rapid rate. Our skin begins to mimic its performance as when we were growing into maturity. You basically trick the skin to work harder. It is happy to do so because your skin wants to protect you by maintaining a healthy amount of surface skin cells. You just need to give your skin a reason.
How you exfoliate matters. Even though the surface layer of skin cells are dead, they are still attached. If you aggressively remove them by any means, a scrub, a wash cloth, a brush, this will only cause damage to your skin.
Think of exfoliation as an act of seduction or a massage. Gently and continually circle in an area until the dead skin cell loosens and voluntarily leaves the body. In this manner there is no tear on the surface of the skin and your skin cell regenerators happily replace the now removed dead skin cells.
If the dead skin cell is aggressively removed, a small tear occurs on the skin and the skin goes in to repair mode rather than replenish mode. This mean that along with cells renewing, clotting blood cells are also sent to that area and repair must take place before revealing the younger, fresher skin cells underneath.
For best results think slow and long when it comes to exfoliation.
Personal note: Of all the personal skin care methods and products, proper exfoliation is the most effective practice in always maintaining the smoothest, healthiest and young looking skin.
Here are my products that exfoliate and help promote better exfoliation.
Gives skin a professional, spa-like exfoliating facial. Contains microdermabrasion scrub that safely and efficiently removes dead skin cells leaving a silky smooth texture that is ready to welcome rejuvenating new skin cells. Recommended for: All skin types. Paraben free • Talc free • Lanolin free. Made in USA
I recommend a weekly exfoliation and more if skin feels rough or looks flaky.

Why do we want to attract and keep water in our skin?
Water reflects light. Water makes skin cells full and round and full of light. Increasing your skins ability to absorb and maintain water is paramount in maintaing a skin that reflects light, thus a young looking skin.
The most profound molecule in our skin to attract and maintain water is Hyaluronic Acid.
If maintaining a young looking skin is of interest to you, this is worth the read (plus there is a great video and extra bonus at the end).
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a carbohydrate occurring naturally throughout the human body. Although Hyaluronic Acid can be found naturally in most every cell in the body, it is found in the greatest concentrations in the skin tissue. Almost 50% of the bodies HA is found here. It is found in both the deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal top layers.
Young skin is smooth and elastic and contains large amounts of HA that helps keep the skin stay young and healthy. The HA provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding up to 1000 times its weight in water. With age, the ability of the skin to produce HA decreases.
Hyaluronic Acid’s consistency and tissue-friendliness allows it to be beneficial in skin-care products as an excellent moisturizer. Because HA is one of the most hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules in nature with numerous benefits for the human body it can be described as “nature’s moisturizer”.
The fact that Hyaluronic Acid is found naturally in the dermis of the skin makes it even more appealing as a skin care ingredient.
Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid. It is a smaller molecule than Hyaluronic Acid that is easily absorbed topically through the skin.
Sodium Hyaluronate is a powerful humectant that attracts and holds on to water, making it the ultimate skin moisturizer. This helps to hydrate skin and keep it moist and supple.
Because it attracts and binds to water, it causes slight swelling. This swelling helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives skin a more youthful appearance. In addition, the subtle swelling increases volume, which makes skin look younger.
People are increasingly looking for products that contain natural ingredients that aren’t toxic and won’t harm or irritate skin. Sodium Hyaluronate fits the bill. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database classifies it as an ingredient with a low potential for toxicity and gives it a high safety rating.
This is why my favorite (and most popular) skin care offering is my Age Defying Serum.
It delivers a concentrated dose of Sodium Hyaluronate to your skin before you moisturize. It dramatically draws and maintains water in your skin.
Because I keep my skin care cost inclusive, it is only $29.
If what you just read makes sense to you, I urge you to try Age Defying Serum.

I gave my sister a bottle of my Age Defying Serum. She asked, “Will it make me look younger?
As I know my sister is highly analytical, her question made me ask myself, “What does young looking skin look like?”
My answer is, young looking skin is smooth, reflects light, and is translucent.
So what behavior and products promote young looking skin?
Hydration/moisturizer
Water reflects light. Water makes skin cells full and round and full of light. Increasing your skins ability to absorb and maintain water in your skin is paramount in maintaing a skin that reflects light, thus a young looking skin.
Translucency/exfoliation
Skin replenishes itself every 30 days. Once full grown, our body has less incentive to create skin cells at our previous growing-up rate. Surface skin cells die but are still attached. They no longer hold water and light, and mask the brightness of the skin cells below. The weekly removal/exfoliation of surface dead skin cells exposes the fresh living skin cells and promotes more rapid skin cell reproduction. This results in our skin behaving and looking like young translucent skin.
I have studied and worked with skin care long enough to know that as long as you make skin care a daily practice, your skin will look and feel better. Just like brushing your teeth, if you skip a day, you can see and feel the difference.
There is no miracle cream. The miracle is in the daily use of the cream.
There are are key ingredients that help promote increased hydration and translucency. Just remember, it will look better for a day.
Much skin care is exclusive.
Skin care is the most over-priced category in cosmetics as it preys on our need to maintain youthfulness. It attempts to make this simple process of skin care exclusive. To gain access to this exclusive club, you have to pay the fees, in this case, inflated skin care pricing.
I went the inclusive route.
I selected skin care that contains key ingredients to promote hydration and translucency. I then chose to make less on the sale of my skin care than my color product so that most anyone can afford using skin care.
I currently have no skin care product over $29! Guess what? It is the Age Defying Serum I gave my sister.
I also offer comprehensive Skin Care Bundles to lessen your cost even more.
As far as inclusivity goes, I also developed a skin care line for men. It is my belief that skin is skin and Makeup Gourmet skin care applies to all genders.
However, for some, there is a stigma for using products traditionally targeted for women. I offer the same solutions for maintaing a young looking skin with my men’s skin care line. The products and packaging are streamlined to appeal to a male’s sensibilities that doesn’t see themselves using products ‘made for women’.
The point of this post is to help you understand the simplicity and availability of achieving and maintaining young looking skin. It is not a mystery. It is not what someone has in a bottle and if you pay your membership fee, you can be part of that club.
it is the simple process of daily care using mindful and affordable products.
I will be posting an ongoing series of Makeup Gourmet Authentic Beauty Makeup skin care highlight in upcoming blogs.
Each post will highlight a skin care category Makeup Gourmet offers.
