Makeup Gourmet Live: S1. E4. Décolleté Care

Thank You Juliette

With summer as a reminder, my good friend and peer Juliette suggested doing a Makeup Gourmet Live episode on décolleté care.

I am so face-focused it never occurred to me to address décolleté care as a topic.

Having extensive training and experience in skincare (I have my own skincare line for both men and women) I made a mental list of the steps I want to recommend (and have recommended to clients).

The research confirmed everything on my mental list and offered some important reminders.

The one aspect of décolleté care that I had not considered was the physical makeup of the skin in the décolleté area.

Following are excerpts from my research. I am quoting these authors and providing links to the full articles.

Firstly, what is the physical makeup of the skin in the décolleté area?

Because the décolleté is thinner with fewer oil glands it is more susceptible to sun damage, aging and irritation and slower to heal from injury and age related changes. The skin on the décolleté area is also more sensitive than skin on other parts of our body and has less elasticity as there is no fat tissue to act as a cushion.  So the skin is more likely to have dryness and discoloration or hyper-pigmentation.

Just like the skin on the face, the skin on the neck and décolleté is a vulnerable region that shows the usual signs of aging: fine or deep-set lines, loss of elasticity, dryness and discoloration from sun damage.

The skin and muscles in the neck are thicker and stronger since they support the jawline and head. However, the major neck muscle is not connected to the bone structure; therefore, it is more prone to loss of elasticity.

The female bust is formed and composed of different types of tissues: glandular, fat and connective tissue. The breast has no muscles, bands or sinews for support, except for the large breast muscle.

In both the neck and décolleté, there is very little fatty tissue and fewer oil glands, therefore making this area more prone to wrinkling and dryness. Also, people who experience hormonal aging may also notice a difference in the texture and tone of skin.

Now to décolleté care

Treating the neck and décolleté is a concern is not just for mature clients but for younger clients who want to preserve and slow down the aging process.

The skin on the décolletage doesn’t produce as much natural oil as the skin on your face so start caring for your neck and chest area as you would your complexion.

For example, when applying cleanser and moisturizer make  sure you apply them right down to your chest. Cosmetics counters are filled with products which promise to perk up or boost the bust area but most contain ingredients that do nothing more than temporarily improve the quality and the appearance of the skin by moisturizing it.

This will improve the appearance of the skin because it will become more hydrated.

Always use sun protection in this area,’ says Madfes. (The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends minimum SPF 30.) If pigmentation and the beginnings of fine lines are starting to drive your cleavage undercover, anti-aging creams may help. These can be the same products you use on your face. Gentle face scrubs can also help even out skin tone.

Creams and serums designed specifically for the neck, or for the neck and chest, may be very appealing, although whether there is much difference between décolleté-specific creams and ones for the face is hard to say. They tend to be expensive, but budget-friendly options are starting to appear on store shelves.

Can you use facial moisturizers and SPF formulas on the neck and décolleté?

If you’re younger and are looking for a preventative – rather than a reparative – solution, starting with your regular moisturizer is a great place to start. However, if your skin is more mature and shows more need for repair, lifting, tightening and rejuvenation, you should use a cream specifically designed to work with the unique characteristics of the neck and décolleté.

If you want to invest in a neck and décolleté treatment, what should you look for in a product?

Look for key ingredients, starting with peptides, which help to replenish lost collagen and promote cell turnover for smoother, firmer skin. Other recommended key ingredients include:

  • Glycolic acid – to exfoliate and promote smoother skin, leading to a more even skin tone
  • Niacinamide – a B3 vitamin that helps strengthen the skin barrier and minimize past sun damage.
  • Retinols, retinoids or retin A– to speed up cell turnover and promote collagen build-up
  • Vitamin E – for antioxidant repair
  • Shea butter – intense hydration with a lightweight texture since it’s compatible with the skin.

Exfoliate weekly to promote skin cell turnover so the products absorb better. Use massage motions toward the heart to promote lymphatic drainage and promote circulation.

 A note about antioxidants.

Antioxidants help prevent surface skin from oxidizing (rusting). There are dozens of effective antioxidants suitable for topical application. All are good and the more the merrier.

Here is something I knew but didn’t cross my mind to articulate.

Always use an SPF year round — a facial or body sunscreen is sufficient, especially since most neck and décolleté treatments do not include SPF.

Note to self: Sunscreen is always applied last going on top (closest to the sun) of all the other treatment you have blended into your skin.

Always use an SPF year round, especially since most neck and décolleté treatments do not include SPF.

Note to self: Sunscreen is always applied last going on top (closest to the sun) of all the other treatment you have blended into your skin.

Because of the skin-shedding nature of glycolic acid, it increases sun sensitivity. Fresher skin cells are exposed prematurely and are ripe to be damaged by the sun.

I suggest using an SPF 50 which blocks an estimated 98 percent of UVB rays. I prefer body SPF over face as you usually get way more product for your money.

Caveat

Most body SPF products protect from UVB rays, and not UVA rays.

Here is an easy way to remember the difference:

UVBurning rays

UVAging rays

UVB rays produce melanin production in our skin that leads to spotting, redness, hyper-pigmentation (a cluster of spotting that appears as a darker patch),  a weathered appearance and texture of the skin, and the worst- skin cancer.

UVA rays break down the ‘cushion’ (collagen) in our skin and results in the appearance of lines, loss of elasticity and a thinning of the skin.

Whatever you do, make sure your SPF lotion address both UVA and UVB rays. This category of sunblock is commonly called full spectrum.

Concise and correct article about SPF.
http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/ask-the-experts/does-a-higher-spf-sunscreen-always-protect-your-skin-better

Besides using topical treatments, how else can you strengthen this area?

Consider targeted exercises for the neck.

One to try: Lay flat on a soft blanket, legs flat in front and head propped onto a soft, thin pillow. Slowly lift your head using the neck muscles but not the abdominal muscles, approximately four inches off the floor, hold and then release back onto the pillow. Repeat ten times. Try the same lifting motions with the head facing left and right. When finished, sit up on the blanket and tilt the neck towards the ceiling.

Beyond Self décolleté care

There are some concerns that go beyond what is possible with your own décolleté care. The same medical treatments available for the face are valid for the décolleté.

If you want dark spots removed or lines filled or any other concern you may have that you cannot address at home, some of the source links for this post provided below provide counsel on what dermatologists and plastic surgeons are able to offer.

Season One. Episode Three.

Join us live next Tuesday May 30 2017 at 6pm PT on the MakeupGourmet Youtube channel.

Glasses have frames. The frames create their own structural framework.

SOMA_Womens_Burgundy_Cateye_Eyeglasses_BP1_2_912x500

Glasses tend to mask your eyes. In short, the frames win.

Many of my eyeglass wearing clients ask for tips for eye makeup that works with the dominant presence of glasses.

To stand up to the structured frame of eyeglasses, I suggest devoting your makeup application to the main structural features of your eye, the eye brows and eyeliner.

Black Woman wearing glasses

If you clearly define your eyebrows and eyeliner, it will read along with your glasses.

hipster-glasses-girls-2

I am not suggesting this is all you do if you want to do more. It is in my experience that emphasizing the eyebrows and eyeliner have the greater impact when paired with glasses.

The finer nuances of eye shadow often get lost through the translation of glasses. If you prefer wearing full eye makeup including eye shadows, by all means do.

woman-with-glasses-touching-head

One mistake I see is when we try to use a lot of eye shadow or over emphasize eye brow makeup to help the eyes stand out. A cleaner look with glasses supports a more balanced look.

Glasses open the opportunity to wear a brighter or darker lip color than you would normally choose. Because eye glass frames grab our attention it works to use a slightly more attention grabbing lip color to balance the two main features of the face, eyes and lips.

5 Top Makeup Tips (You Probably Aren’t Doing) + Free Demo Videos

Tip #1

Screenshot 2016-03-04 17.09.07Eyes First: After skincare, do eye makeup first. Even the most minimal eye makeup wearer has fallout during the application. Finish the eyes first, then gently clean up around the eye with a cotton swab with a Cetaphil cleanser as it does not require water. This will save time and (bonus) crisp up borders of eye makeup better than the most precise application.

Tip #2

Screenshot 2016-03-04 17.08.17Bambi the Lash: To maximize lashes, spread the top eyelash hairs wide both on the outer and inner corners of the eye. Use the tip of the wand rather than the side to achieve this affect. Allow mascara to dry to act as a setting gel and then reapply on the outer corner to draw focus to the openness of your eyes. It’s like putting a little exclamation mark at the outer corner of your eyes!

Tip #3

Screenshot 2016-03-04 17.07.26Corrector, Not Concealer:
Discover how correctors can neutralize darkness and redness rather than covering it with concealer. The bonus of correctors are many. Correctors reflect light better than skin tone pigment promoting younger looking skin. They require less product to achieve a better affect resulting in a less makeup-y look. It does not oxidize (get darker) like skin tone pigment in concealers and foundation for a longer lasting maximum result.

Tip #4

Screenshot 2016-03-04 17.06.32Lash Filler: The eye line already exists. It is the skin between the roots of your lashes. Rather than drawing a line, fill in your anatomy by using my Lash Filler technique. Capture your true (and only) eye line by delivering waterproof eyeliner onto the skin between the top eyelash hairs. Liner that does not connect to your lashes is Art Liner as it changes your eye shape rather than capture it. Always capture your true line first with Lash Filler, then add Art Liner (such as my wedge liner) if you want to change the shape of your eye.

Tip #5

Screenshot 2016-03-04 17.05.20Straight Line Brow: To maximize the eyebrow, draw 2 straight lines. We are 3-dimensional beings and our faces are curvy. Even the straightest line drawn on our face is curving on our anatomy. I discovered working with straight lines in key areas of the face delivers maximum result with minimum product. Secondly, use the flat-edge tip of the brush to fluff up and soften the lines. The trick is to not fill in your brows, it is to super-impose a shape within your natural brow that highlights and heightens the shape of the brow you want others to notice most.

Permanent Makeup: To Tattoo Or Not To Tattoo

Throughout my many years of seeing thousands of clients, I have come across a wide variety of permanent (tattoo) makeup results. Many Makeup Gourmet clients want to know: Is permanent makeup a good idea?

Tattoo_Machine_Parts

Here are the facts.

There are now two types of tattoo makeup, permanent and semi-permanent.

permanent-makeup-eyeliner-1

Permanent makeup is applied much like a body tattoo. Pigment is injected into the second (middle) and sometimes third layer of skin where the pigment lives eternally.

permanent-makeup-tattoo

Semi-permanent is injected mostly into the first (outermost) layer of skin and a little into the second
layer of skin. Here the pigment lives anywhere from 6 months to three years.

Regardless of which method you may use, here is useful info to know:

It is essential that the service is not done in one visit.

The application needs to be done in  layers. Pigments react to the different skin it is injected. You and your technician need to see how the pigment reacts before adding a second layer. This provides for the opportunity to color correct/balance so the result is what you intend.

Know thy pigment.Tattoo-Ink-Skin-Pigment

Although the machines used to inject the pigment are required to be FDA approved, the pigments are not. Sub par pigment can color mutate drastically, and worse, may cause painful skin irritation. Permanent makeup uses more classic tattoo pigment where semi-permanent makeup may use much more skin friendly mineral pigment. Ask your technician what pigment they use and research it before you have it injected in your skin.

feb_after1

Will the color change over time?

Yes. Even the very best permanent makeup will color change over time. It is inevitable and unavoidable. Be prepared for some maintenance down the road. Semi permanent makeup is supposed to fade, thus its name. While it fades the color will obviously change.

Why do it?

There are so many reasons why people choose permanent and semi permanent makeup

Time.

cc_momandkids

Busy lifestyles are enhanced with less prep time in the morning.

networking-for-busy-professionals

Appearance.

54958d2d33890_-_hbz-supermodels-no-makeup-01-xl

Many have lost or over-tweezed their brows. Others feel washed out without a little makeup. They feel who they see in the mirror is not the ‘them’ they remember. Permanent and semi permanent makeup provide that subtle adjustment to waking up and feeling ‘normal’ with that first morning look in the mirror.

Technique.

Facelift Surgery

For many, the ability to apply makeup to their satisfaction is not entirely possible. Disabling factors include poor eyesight and shaky hands amongst others. If this is you and makeup is important to you,  permanent and semi permanent makeup may be a good alternative.

Head start.

ls

Many permanent and semi permanent makeup clients still apply makeup over their permanent and semi permanent makeup. Having the tattoo as a guide helps make application easier. It is also a method for a more dramatic makeup by intensifying the tattoo.

Due diligence

if it were me, I would research the heck out of my  permanent and semi permanent makeup technician options. My checklist would include:

Referrals. Ask people who they know and who they like.

Reviews. Business cannot hide from the internet anymore. Do not take the technician’s word for it, see what others have to say.

Before and After.

BnA-PattyIPAD-21

Ask to see many (50 at least) before and after photos. Although anything can be altered in photoshop, knowing that the technician has done this procedure countless times before raises your success rate.

Images. Collect images of makeup you like on models with similar coloring and features to yours. Show them to the technician to better communicate your needs and expected outcome.

maxresdefault-1

Draw it first. Make sure the technician draws in exactly where the injected pigment is going before you begin the procedure. This way you may visualize what the result will be and guide it to your upmost satisfaction.

It may seem funny that I talk about a makeup option that is not a service or product I provide. In fact, I may sell a few less brow colors or eye liners because of it. Doesn’t matter. As always, my mission is to give away my makeup expertise in all its manifestations. Personal appearance is a huge priority for so many. In any way that I may assist, I will.

How to Pick a Foundation Shade & Quick Demo Video

How do you do it? (Quick Demo Video)

Once you know the foundation formula you want, you now need to get the right shade.

You have to put it on your skin, and not just your skin, your jawline. The hand or forearm will not do unless that is where you will be wearing the foundation.

IMG_4909

You do not have to apply it to your whole face. Instead apply an opaque vertical stripe a fingertip width wide along the jaw line closer to your ear than lips. This area is the truest shade of your skin. Also, we want the shade to disappear at the jawline. (Quick Demo Video)

fond_de_ten_corect

Allow the foundation to begin to dry. Watch the edges of the stripe. If the shade disappears into the skin outside the stripe, chances are this shade will look most like your own skin. (Quick Demo Video)

16

Why do we wait for it to dry a little?

There are internal and external forces that factor into the final dry-down of a foundation.

They are:

• PH balance of the skin
• Body temperature
• Environmental oxidants

All of these factors affect the pigment and it is wise to let them have their affect before choosing your shade.

The first two, PH balance and body temperature, affect the shade very quickly. In a minute you will know the affect on the foundation.

Oxidation however takes longer to manifest. Suffice it to say that no matter what shade you choose, it will get slightly to moderately darker by the end of the day.

ShadeTip

If you need to choose between 2 shades, one a little lighter than your skin tone and one a little darker, I recommend always choosing the lighter one. It will get darker during the day. (Quick Demo Video)

1312

If you start with a foundation a little darker, as it oxidizes, it will give the skin a more weathered appearance. As this is usually not the desired appearance, try to use restraint and not select the slightly darker shade.

Do I need to try it on my skin?

Absolutely. Color charts either in stores or online are a guide to narrow down the shade that is appropriate for you. Without putting it on your skin, you will NEVER know if it is the right shade for you. (Quick Demo Video)

MIN_FoundationColors

The only exception is if looking at tints such as BB creams or my Tinted veil. They usually come in 3 to 4 shades max.

Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 12.14.08 PM

The pigment is so minimal in these products. Most people know if they are a Light, Medium or Dark and the color choices do not go much deeper than that.

What if my skin tone changes throughout the year, winter is lighter and summer is darker?

For those whose skin has a wide shade range throughout the year, I suggest 2 foundations, one for your lightest shade and one for your darkest shade.

Screen-Shot-2015-09-14-at-20.49.50-1024x488

It is far easier to mix a little foundation together and get your exact shade as it fluctuates throughout the year than getting a new foundation shade every time your skin lightens or deepens. (Quick Demo Video)

foundation-matrix-header

What are the pitfalls to avoid?

lipstick_mainIf purchasing in a store and being helped by an employee, do not let the employee rub the makeup into your skin to show you how well it blends.

It is easy to make a number of shades blend well if it is blended enough. Use the stripe dry down method before having anything applied all over your face.

Use the daylight test. It is best to have your own compact mirror and check the new foundation in a few lighting scenarios before selecting your shade. Outdoors is a must and bad bathroom down lighting will often reveal if the undertone of the shade is wrong.

Makeup for Glasses with 3 Video Tutorials

Glasses have frames. The frames create their own structural framework.

SOMA_Womens_Burgundy_Cateye_Eyeglasses_BP1_2_912x500

Glasses tend to mask your eyes. In short, the frames win.

aa5115220ed9b6a88cf3c6820cabe4ca

The Finish of Makeup Part Three: Shimmer Finish + Video Tutorial

The finish of our makeup, namely Matte, Satin or Shimmer sends a clear and unique message.

This applies to all makeup; skin, eyes, lips and cheeks.

Here are the Finishes defined;

Matte – Does not reflect light. In a way, almost absorbs light.

Satin – Reflects light similar to how the water and oil in our skin naturally reflects light.
