No matter how careful the makeup application is, there are times when too much makeup has been applied. Its appearance is thicker than your skin and sits on top of the face. The instinctual reaction is to wipe some off spreading things sideways and thinning the makeup indiscriminately. There is a better way.

The best technique for flattening any slip product is press and roll. This means to physically flatten the product into the skin with your finger or sponge. This is especially useful when applying concealer, corrector, and foundation.

For smaller areas where too much has been applied, usually under the eyes, using the pad of the top of your middle finger is the best tool. It is rounded and pliable and works itself well into that snuggie corner between the nose and under eye.

The motion is as follows. Press the pad of the middle finger where you have too much product and turn your wrist side to side while applying pressure with the finger. The pad of the finger is rolling back and forth over the area you want to diminish. Without removing virtually any product, the product on the skin flattens and smooths into the skin and becomes part of the skin.

Sometimes rather than pressing and rolling you may simply tap the pad of the finger along the area of concern to flatten it as well. Tt is important to understand that you are not tapping the area like you would your finger on the table to make a noise. It is a more focused pressure that gently yet firmly flattens the product into the skin.

The technique for using a makeup sponge with the press and roll is simply replacing the pad of the finger for the pad of the sponge. If using a flat sided sponge, squeeze it between your thumb and other fingers so that it becomes rounded. If using a curved sponge, such as the egg sponge, it is already curved for you. The action is virtually the same as when you use your finger. Press the pad of the sponge into the area you want to smooth and roll your wrist. Mechanically with this technique it feels more comfortable to roll in Just one direction, not back and forth. Either way is fine.

Using the sponge is amazing for making any wet foundation application look more skin like. If too much foundation has been applied, this technique will solve the problem. If the right amount has been applied, it only makes the application look better by making it more skin like. I suggest using this technique when using wet foundation every time.

A parting thought. Understand that everyone uses the same makeup. They put it in the same places on their face. The difference in the outcome is the attention to detail.  Most people apply their makeup generally and because of this, their makeup looks generally good. Some people apply the same makeup specifically and their makeup looks specifically good. The trick is in the specifics. Learn the specifics and have your makeup look specifically good.

The fishtail brushstroke delivers a more skin thin finish with even the heaviest of cream/slip makeup products. Slip products are products that are even remotely wet/or creamy in texture. Even products that start off as a cream and dry down to a powder are considered a slip product.

For the Face with a Heart technique of makeup application, the fishtail  brush stroke occurs almost exclusively with eyeshadow base, corrector, and concealer. Although many foundations are also a slip product, we do not use the fishtail brush stroke to apply the foundation.

The most natural feeling way to apply slip products with a brush is to brush the product in one direction. For instance with concealer we start under the inner corner of our eye and brush the concealer downward and outward always brushing in the same direction.

This seems to make good sense however the product is not being delivered in an even way. It is being layered on top of itself unevenly rather than becoming part of the skin.

The fishtail brushstroke at first feels unnatural. Rather than brushing the product in one direction, the brush slips back and forth like a fishtail to blend the product into the skin rather than across the skin.  For this to physically work the brush must be held close to the hair end of the brush to create the flip flop simulation of a fishtail.

The eyelid and under eye area is the most vulnerable for showing any dehydration and fine lines. It is exactly in these areas where we apply key makeup products to either conceal or enhance our eyes. This is why learning to apply these slip products in this very thin skin area is paramount to your makeup looking like you and not like makeup.

Skin thin is both a concept and technique for applying makeup. The technique is that no layer of makeup is thicker than the top layer of your skin. The concept is that when makeup is skin thin it is part of you and not on top of you.

Part Two is all about the Deposit Technique of makeup application and how it applies to skin thin makeup.

The Deposit Technique is primarily for dry makeup products such as eyeshadow and powder.  This makeup application method changes the way the brush is held. It increases the capacity for absolute control with your application.

This technique adheres to all the skin thin makeup rules. The process is orderly and clean.

Rather than brushing product across the skin, gently press the product into the skin. When applying eyeshadow use the flat side of a wide brush. Press the flat side of the brush into the product then gently tap off the excess.  Hold the brush like a microphone with the flat side of the brush parallel to the surface of your skin. Gently yet firmly press the brush exactly where you want the product to go.

Advantages to using the deposit technique

• Product is delivered to exactly where you want it to go.
• Product is applied extremely flat so there is no makeup buildup on the skin, thus skin thin.
• Complete control of the saturation of the pigment of the product. This means the more times you press the product in the same area the more saturated the pigment becomes on the skin giving you complete control of the intensity of the color of the makeup.

Deposit technique is also for translucent powder when setting foundation. By pressing the powder with the flat side of the powder brush and not the tip, both the foundation and the powder are flattened more thinly and the wear time of the makeup is increased.

Beyond the superior advantages to the appearance of your makeup when using the deposit technique it also eliminates the common problems when brushing on powder product to the skin.

Disadvantages to brushing rather than depositing product.

• Powder product becomes airborne and floats to other parts of the face.
• Makeup is layered on top of each other creating makeup build up thicker than the skin.
• Placement of product is compromised as brushing tends to be more general and loses specificity in its placement.

Another great advantage to the deposit technique is how you lift product from the pallet to the brush. When using a brushing technique one usually swirls the brush into the pallet creating a bit of a mess and displacement of the product. When using the deposit technique the brushes is either pressed or rolled onto the products dispersing very little of the product around the packaging.

Although this matters very little in the look of your makeup it does matter in the look of your makeup kit and the waste that accrues over time.

Skin thin is both a concept and technique for applying makeup. The technique is that no layer of makeup is thicker than the top layer of your skin. The concept is that when makeup is skin thin it is part of you and not on top of you.

The outermost layer of our skin, the epidermis, ranges from a half a millimeter to 1 mm thick on our face. in order for makeup to be part of us and not top of us each layer of makeup is applied as most thin as possible. The grace in doing so supports the appearance of makeup to be coming from the skin itself and not on the skin.

The idea of wiping or brushing makeup across the face works against the skin thin concept. it is the difference between painting a surface and polishing a surface. With painting the goal is to cover the surface being painted. With polishing the goal is to enhance the surface being polished without covering it.

For example, imagine a raw wood table. You want to make it look attractive. One method is to choose an appealing color of paint end cover the raw surface of the table. 

Another method is buff a translucent polish that brings out the luster of the pinewood without concealing it. 

With makeup we see examples of both approaches daily. For those who choose to wear makeup, some are concealed by its presence and others are revealed by its presence.

As one goal of authentic beauty makeup is to have others see you more clearly, the latter approach is most desirable.

Both methods require equal amounts of time and energy. What differs is the technique. As polishing a table brings out the luster of the table, skin thin makeup application brings out the luster of you.

Everyone looks exactly as they are and there is nothing more authentic than that. Authentic makeup articulates the face. Makeup needs to be applied because of the face and not in spite of the face. Changing why we use makeup changes the expression and impression of makeup.

Symmetry of the face is perceived as balanced and trustworthy. Authentic makeup is the art of appearing more clearly to ourselves and others.

As humans we want to be heard. It is highly satisfying to clearly communicate our thoughts to others. If our species did not have sight, we would hear every word that anyone says. Because of vision, what we hear is censored and translated through what we see.

For better and worse, we visually consider the source of what we hear. As makeup is a powerful and persuasive visual tool, we are heard more clearly when we use makeup with grace.

By reducing distractions, the subjectivity of the visual is taken out of the equation so that what is being said is heard.

No one looks wrong. Because symmetry and balance is proven to create trust, authentic makeup is an effective method to visually gain that trust.
