“Beware the Ides of March”

“Beware the ides of March”                “Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so”
                            Shakespeare–Julius Caesar                                            Shakespeare–Hamlet

So what is the ‘Ides of March’ really and should we beware? And if so, how much?

The word “ides” comes from Latin for “in the middle of.” So the ides was the exact middle day of each month.

March was the first month of the year in the Roman calendar and as it took our satellite’s phases into account, the ides always fell on a full moon, which gave it even more supernatural clout.

Unsurprisingly, this was the deadline in the Roman age for paying off one’s debts and settling affairs.

As March Mascara Madness continues at Makeup Gourmet, we pay tribute to this literary reference to an historic Roman superstition on this, the Ides of March.

What is the Best Mascara?

March Mascara Madness

“…really makes my eyes pop.” Makeup Gourmet Mascara User

The pursuit for the ‘best’ is an unrequited endeavor.

No matter what you may like, is there something better?

This endless loop is highly prevalent with mascara.

Obviously, everyone has unique needs and expected results, and each mascara is designed to fit a particular criteria.

I believe we give mascara too much credit. We expect the mascara to fulfill our lash enhancement needs.

In my experience, a little technique goes a very long way in making any mascara fulfill your lash enhancement needs.

” …glides on smoothly and evenly.” Makeup Gourmet Mascara User

In that light, the more straightforward  the mascara formula and wand the better.

Mascara that can be manipulated to do many things is my preference.

As we often are doing a different look for day, night, work play etc, having one mascara that can that can deliver a clean lash, a thick lash, a long lash, a false-lash look, and more, is ideal.

Have you heard about Makeup Gourmet’s mascara? It does all the above and more. All you need is a little technique.

“Definitely my favorite mascara of all time and great value!” Makeup Gourmet mascara user

Before getting to the technique demo videos, here is one piece of advice.

If you want your lashes to curl up, curl them. Although there is merit to some ‘curling’ mascaras, nothing curls lashes like an eyelash curler.

Final note: Always apply mascara last so no powder products float and stick to your lashes diminishing the light reflective finish of fresh mascara. No one wants an ashy lash.

Makeup for Cross Dressers and Female Identifiers

When doing male to female makeup, there are two makeups that need to be done.

The first makeup is to neutralize the male, and the second makeup is to apply the female.

The Face with a Heart method works with the geometry of the face. This translates into softening the squares and rectangles of the male anatomy and sharpening the triangles of the female anatomy.

Cross dressers

Cross dresser is a general term for any person who wears clothing typical of another gender, regardless of their reasons for doing so.

In my experience when working with cross dressers, there is something highly charging, like an electricity, when posing as your opposite of sex.

For many of my clients, they discover aspects of themselves that were never allowed to surface otherwise.

They make new friends. They have new conversations. Their personality broadens.

Unfortunately for many, their secret passion of cross dressing is feared to be misconstrued.

Confidentiality is a must. This is why I am asked to do makeup for high profile notables such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Vice President Al Gore and Paul McCartney. What is discussed in the makeup room stays in the makeup room!

Female identifiers

For those born in a male body yet identifying as female, there is a confirming experience to look in the mirror and see a female, not just in identification, but in appearance.

The emotional freedom of accepting your sexual identification is a liberation. For those who wish to transition physically, there is a long road ahead. Every step of the journey helps to transfer one physical aspect of their whole.

Makeup has proven to be a powerful step towards female identification fulfillment.

Universal questions

What clothes do I like? What hairstyle do I like

If I choose to wear makeup what style of makeup do I like?

None of these answers are vital to survival, thus we are not genetically pre-dispositioned to know these things. This is what we develop as a personal sense of style.

When working with any client it is most important for me to understand their lifestyle, their needs, how they see themselves in the world, and to allow the makeup that I share with them to reflect that.

Makeup is universal. How we use it is unique.

Your look

I work with everyone, inclusive of cross dressers and female identifiers.

I ask everyone the same series of questions before I start their makeup lesson.  The purpose is to create an appropriate look for each person.

No one is supposed to wear makeup and no one is not supposed to wear makeup. If you choose to wear makeup, you want to look your best.

Makeup is for everyone

I welcome everyone equally, including crossdressers and female identifiers.

A strength is my ability to translate and simplify how you want to see yourself with makeup.

If you want to wear makeup, wear makeup. Let me show you how.

Whom do I recommend for bridal hair styling?

Referrals are tricky business. On one hand, we want to let others know about great things. On the other hand, what is great for one person may not be so great for another.

I used to jump at the chance to refer people that I thought did a great job. Problem is, a referral’s work becomes a reflection on you because you made the referral.

One of my only two negative Yelp reviews came from a bride who asked me online via Yelp for a last-minute hair stylist recommendation.

I never met the person who asked for the referral. Most of my regular hair peeps were booked so I made a first time referral with a hair stylist I had seen work once. I wanted to help.

Turns out this referral did not live up to the last-minute bride’s expectations. For this bride (who I never spoke to in person) there was no one to blame but me, obviously, since I was the one that made the referral.

Lesson learned.

Now when asked for a referral, I tell people I know someone whom I have hired in the past and would hire again, however please, use your own judgement on whether you want to hire them or not.

I preface all this because I have had a friend for many years who I first met one bridal hair & makeup morning. I was doing bridal makeup and she was doing hair.

The first time we were booked by the same bride, we only noticed each other.

The second time we were booked separately by another bride we said ‘hey I remember you from another wedding’ and we spoke favorably of each other’s work.

By the third time we were both booked coincidentally for another bridal hair and makeup morning, we took it as an omen and have been working together whenever possible ever since.

What I love about her work are so many things.

Here are the highlights:

  • She’s on time.
  • She works efficiently but not hurriedly, and every style she does is stunning.
  • She communicates before styling someone’s hair to make sure that the results are what they want.
  • When the result isn’t exactly what the client wants, she quickly and easily does something else. It is amazing to me how effortlessly she’s able to go from one look to another on the same head of hair in a matter of moments
  • We work extremely well together, especially with larger bridal parties (10 or more), getting everyone feeling and looking their very best in a timely fashion.
  • Another plus is that her pricing is similar to mine so we come across as equals in the client’s eyes as far as our value is concerned.

She is, without a doubt, the one person that I will refer unconditionally.

In your career life, think about the number of people who you may refer unconditionally, knowing that your referral puts your professional reputation on the line.

Freedom of Information on the internet rules. No one owns their own brand anymore. You are as good as what people say about you.

The best a brand owner can do is to put their best foot forward with everything they share.

This is my best foot forward. If you are looking for a bridal hair stylist, or any other event hair stylist, please look no further than Catherine Hackworth of Tulip Salon. My peer, my friend, my bridal hair and makeup morning buddy.

I know this post sounds like a paid advertisement. Nothing can be farther from the truth.
I was thinking about aspects of the bridal hair and makeup experience that gets the most positive feedback.
Hands down, the ease with which Cat and I work together to make the bridal morning go as smoothly as possible is always mentioned as a great memory of the wedding day (plus everyone looks ‘amazing’).

Thank you for reading.

Makeup Gourmet’s Announcement of its New MUG Makeup Artist Lab Advances the Training Landscape

Makeup Gourmet Chris Scott Launches makeup artist training Laboratory for students of makeup to obtain highly needed advanced experience and training before entering the professional makeup artist work force.

January 16, 2018  – SAN FRANCISCO – Makeup Gourmet is proud to announce the launch of its new Mug Makeup Artist Lab in San Francisco, providing a highly creative and instructive environment for students of makeup to get the vital know-how necessary to succeed as a makeup artist.

According to Makeup Gourmet founder Chris Scott, “This is the missing link between a training makeup artist and being fully prepared to be highly effective in the makeup artist market”.

“Mastering an art requires continuous exploration and a repetition of skills until all aspects of this art form becomes second nature,” Mr Scott, said. In this new supervised environment, makeup artists have the expertise of #1 Best Seller, FACE WITH A HEART MASTERING AUTHENTIC BEAUTY MAKEUP author Chris Scott as their guide and mentor.

“Once trained every makeup artist says “What next?”. Mug Makeup Artist Lab provides artists the necessary on going real life experience to help guarantee success before they go out on their own,” Scott added.

Makeup Gourmet Studio has a comprehensive list of makeup artist training courses in its curriculum. This edition of The Mug Makeup Artist Lab is the safety net that students are looking for to confirm and grow their expertise. The confidence and advancement of their skill set is all that is needed to forge out and create a name for themselves.

The concept is simple. Practice your art and have a master of that art available to answer and demonstrate every question on the spot.

Mr. Scott believes that repetition is the best practice for being the best. “It is one thing to learn the scales on the piano, it is another thing to play the scales and make it sound like music. There is no substitute for the hours spent when becoming an artist”, Scott says.

The Mug Makeup Artist Lab is open every Monday 10am-6pm. This accommodates both the Beauty School student and hairstylist’s schedule who are often the demographic seeking makeup artist training.

Mr Scott finished with “As a successful Makeup Gourmet student once said in full earnest, ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail’.”

New: MUG Makeup Artist Lab

MUG Makeup Artist Lab

Confidently apply anyone’s makeup

For the practicing/working makeup artist

A student of makeup needs to be taught with great attention-to-detail by their instructors. Students must be given absolute skills that they can take into the marketplace and be able to confidently apply anyone’s makeup.

My experience with makeup artist’s in training is after learning a solid basic skill set, they want to learn more technique. The thinking is learning more technique will make them a better makeup artist.

It won’t.

Learning more technique will give them a larger skill set, not a better one.

What makes a better makeup artist is putting skills to the test.

This is a difficult leap to make as makeup artists in training do not have the resources to go about testing their skill set.

Enter MUG Makeup Artist Lab

MUG Makeup Artist Lab provides the discipline, experience and ongoing practice/training environment to advance the growing makeup artist.

I am a critic of large/expensive makeup courses where students spend their time/money watching a demonstration then repeating what they saw on each other. With a little training thrown in, students are paying a premium to practice on each other and spend half of the time being a model and not practicing themselves at all.

There is great value in having your makeup done while training as a makeup artist, I just think paying the premium tuition for that experience is not the best use of student’s money.

MUG Makeup Artist Lab provides the affordable structure for students to continue practicing and training simultaneously.

MUG Makeup Artist Lab defined.

MUG Makeup Artist Lab is an hybrid training/practice environment.

Students are given a structured approach to practice and grow their skill set, and at the same time, on-hand is their instructor to answer questions and demonstrate technique not yet grasped by the student to further their training.

There are 4 Makeup Artist stations available at any one time.

This means there can be no more than 8 people in the MUG Lab at any one time.  4 practicing makeup artists and 4 models.

This small lab size insures careful attention to detail for all in attendance.

Makeup artists may pair up and work with each other or bring their own model.

Please Note:
Makeup Gourmet does not pair artists. If you wish to pair with another artist, those arrangements are made exclusively by you.
Models are not provided except upon request with one week notice. Pricing for provided models is $20/hr. Minimum 4hrs.
Because space is limited, there is a ‘corkage fee’ of $10/hour when bringing your own model.

Cost for this training/practice environment is $15-$20/hour.

It is, by far, the most affordable way to get professional training while advancing your craft.

Participants may spend their time however they choose. In every case, I am there to answer questions and demonstrate technique.

Suggested uses of MUG Lab

Self Guided: For the artist who knows what they want to get better at and comes in to practice just that (Minimum 4 hours).

Look Book*: Suggested for all makeup artists! One of my three makeup mentors taught me this and it made all the difference. Please see Look Book below for all the info.(Minimum 4 hours).

Safety Net: Meet with potential and actual clients with the knowledge that I am there to help. (Minimum 2 hours)

Client: For the working makeup artist who wants to meet their client in a makeup studio space. (Minimum 2 hours)

*

What is a Look Book?

A personal collection of images of makeup applications to which you aspire.

Suggested criteria for these images include:

• Face size needs to be at least half or more the size of the page. Small images leave out too much detail

• Make sure it is makeup you personally love or admire.

• Make sure it is makeup you can re-create or want to learn how to re-create

For makeup students, this is the missing link learning tool to expand your makeup skills.

Many painters perfect their technique by copying painting styles they wish to emulate. The makeup must must also learn how to achieve
their desired results by ‘figuring out’ how a makeup is done from an image to a model.

Most accomplished makeup artists have spent many hours recreating makeup looks they admire from print. As makeup styles are endless, the more looks that can be perfected, the deeper the pool of ideas to draw from when creating a fresh new look.

Do Different Skin Types Need Different Products?

Article written & submitted By Jane Winchester

The past few decades have seen the makeup industry make a big shift in terms of specialization of skincare according to skin type. For example, dry or mature skin can benefit from an extra boost of ingredients such as retinol, antioxidants and alpha hydroxy acids, whereas oily and combination skins are well suited to products with ingredients such as pomegranate oil (which is helpful in preventing breakouts). Luckily, there are many value-for-money products that work well with all skin types. In this post, we discuss how to prep and prime skin for foundation, suggesting products that can be part of your daily routine, regardless of your skin type.

What Ingredients Can All Complexions Benefit From?

There are so many naturally obtained ingredients that enable our skin to function at an optimal level, including:

* Green tea extracts: (which fight the free radicals that cause our skin to develop lines and to lose elasticity)

* Pomegranate oil: (which staves off skin cancer, increases circulation and promotes cell regeneration, to name just a few functions)

* Vitamins A, C & E: These vitamins are the ‘holy grail’ of most top skincare products. Collectively, they battle free radicals and stimulate cell regeneration.

Aloe: This ingredient perfectly captures the right moisture balance, hydrating skin without producing an unattractive oily sheen.

Can Foundation Suit All Skin Types?

When it comes to makeup, you may be used to purchasing specific matte foundations (if you have oily skin ) or anti-ageing foundations (for dry or mature skin). Experts advising us on the right foundation for each skin type normally recommend foregoing stick foundations if one’s skin is oily, and powdery foundations if skin is dry, but liquid foundations can work perfectly well on all skin types. The key to success and long-lasting perfection, is the type of oil used. Makeup Gourmet’s Jojoba Liquid Foundation is the perfect product for all seasons and skin types, since it contains jojoba oil – which is similar to the natural oil our skin produces, and which absorbs the latter rather than separating it. Additionally, this type of oil does not clog pores.

What Steps are Involved in Prepping Skin for Makeup that Lasts All Day?

All skin types need to ensure they cleanse, tone, and moisturize skin before applying their primer and foundation. When it comes to your cleanser, you may have been told that oily skins should stick to foaming products and dry skins to crème cleansers. In fact, products like Makeup Gourmet Foaming Crème Cleanser are perfect proof of how a product that foams up can be used on dryer skins as well, owing to its potent blend of aloe and green tea extract.

The brand also has a Renewing Créme Cleanser, enriched with Glycolic and mixed fruit acid to gently slough off dead skin cells while leaving skin nice and soft, so your choice should ultimately depend on the type of product you prefer working with.

After cleansing, pat your face with a clean towel and apply Mild Toning Elixir Spray or Rosewater Cucumber Balancing Mist. Both products are good for dry, normal, and oily skin, and contain soothing extracts such as aloe, cucumber, and green tea. Just hold the bottle around 10-12 inches from your face, close your eyes, and spritz to enjoy the refreshing coolness.

The last step involves moisturizing your face. This will enable your primer, and later your foundation, to glide on effortlessly. A product like Daily Intensive Moisturizer is great for day and night and works well with all skin types, since it is enriched with Vitamin C, Pro Vitamin B, and Panthenol.

An ideal choice for all skin types, especially if you live in a sunny area or you do a lot of outdoor sport, is Antioxidant Day Crème SPF 15, formulated with hydrating aloe and Vitamins A, C, & E, and a handy ally against sunburn and the ageing effect that UV rays can have on our skin. If you have wrinkles around the eyes, at night time, use Intensive Moisture Eye Complex, rich in caffeine, to stimulate cell metabolism and improve circulation, and Vitamins A, C, & E to fight free radicals.

It is amazing to think how easy it can be to achieve a perfect look when it comes to makeup. Far from worrying about whether a particular foundation will be too drying or will lead to unwanted shine, it is best to opt for a liquid foundation made with oils that match those of your complexion. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing is now also a lot less mysterious than it used to be. Gentle yet effective products are the way to go for flawless, toned, and beautifully luminous skin.

 Basic Tips for Choosing Foundation

There’s no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” foundation. Wearing a foundation that’s not appropriate for your skin can make it drier, oilier or cause it to flake. Determine the best foundation for your skin type, and then sample different foundations designed for your skin until you find one that feels right and gives you the coverage you need.

You need to take into account several factors to find the right foundation. Your skin tone, skin type, facial features, age, hair color and the look you want (natural, classic, high-fashion, edgy) are all components of the right foundation choice.

Finding a foundation that fits your skin type is the most important factor in choosing this makeup necessity. You can damage already compromised skin if you have dry skin and wear a foundation designed for oily skin, or wear foundation for dry skin and you are acne-prone.

Determine Your Skin Type

The first thing you need to do is accurately determine your skin type. Oily, dry, combination and sensitive are the four most common skin types. Your skin type can change a few times during your life, so it’s important to reexamine your skin every few years to make sure you’re still using the right foundation.

You could be making oily or dry skin worse or causing new problems if you’re using the wrong skincare products-soaps, scrubs, washes, etc.- on your face.

Regardless of your skin type, you should stop using heavy emollients, products containing fragrance, abrasive scrubs, harsh cleaners or cleaning brushes with stiff bristles.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and then follow it with a toner. Wait 15 to 30 minutes later, and judge how your skin reacts to the application.

You have dry skin if your skin becomes tight, flakes or feels dry. Oil diffusing over your face or shiny skin means you have oily skin. You have combination skin if your jaws and cheeks feel somewhat tight or dry and your T-zone (your nose, chin, and mid-forehead) becomes shiny or oily.

Most people have combination skin because the center of the face contains more oil glands than the cheeks.

How to Choose the Right Foundation

There are hundreds of well-known foundation brands at all price ranges. Some women buy foundation at the drugstore, while other go to beauty supply stores, Sephora, Ulta or high-end department stores. Regardless of the price or brand, if you know your skin type and have a specific overall look in mind, it’s much easier to find the right foundation.

Browse our list of some popular foundation types to determine the best foundation for your skin type.

Liquid Foundations with a Matte Finish

Pros

  • Liquid foundations feel light on the skin and are easy to blend.
  • They are safe if you have an oily or acne-prone complexion.
  • Liquid foundations control excess shine and are excellent if you live in humid climates and other foundations don’t last long.

Cons

  • Blending mistakes after the foundation sets may cause hard-to-correct streaking.
  • Matte finish foundations may highlight wrinkles or flaky skin. Avoid this problem by applying moisturizer or serum before using foundation.

Pros

  • Powder foundations are excellent for normal, slightly oily or slightly dry skin.
  • They are lightweight and portable. Some brands offer a subtle glow, or luminescence, which softens the complexion.
  • Use powder over your daily moisturizer to reduce the shininess if you use sunscreen or a lotion containing sunscreen.

Cons

  • Powder foundations clump on oily or acne-prone skin and can slide into pores, making skin oilier.
  • Avoid powder foundation if you have dry skin. The powder absorbs moisture and makes your skin drier.
  • Powder foundation can cake on your skin if you put on too much of it, and make your face look like it has a mask over it.

Foundation Sticks

Pros

  • Like pressed powder foundations, you can carry foundation sticks in your purse. They are great for touch-ups and can conceal pimples and other imperfections.
  • You can use it as a concealer stick only, regardless of your skin type and it usually won’t lead to breakouts if you use it in a small area.

Cons

  • Foundation sticks can melt if you keep them in your purse or backpack outdoors for a long time. They can break if you roughly handle them.
  • It’s hard to blend waxy foundation stick over your cheeks or other large areas.
  • Foundation sticks can clog pores to lead to breakouts. It works better with dry or normal skin and is a poor choice for oily or even combination skin.

Anti-aging Foundations

Pros

  • Also called anti-aging serums, these foundations provide coverage and nourish all skin types, but are particularly suitable for mature skin.
  • Use an anti-aging foundation along with cleansers and lotions designed to prevent lines and wrinkles. This combination helps keep skin youthful-looking. You don’t need to be an older adult to use anti-aging serum; even young people can benefit from using them.

Cons

  • Some anti-aging foundations are advertised as miracle-workers. Some foundations can certainly refresh your face and make you look younger, but no makeup can turn you into a movie star overnight.
  • The amount of age-defying ingredients in anti-aging foundation varies. Some foundations only contain small amounts of Retin A, Vitamin C serum and other ingredients necessary for younger-looking skin.

Pros

  • Hydrates skin without being greasy.
  • Gives skin sheen to make it more youthful-looking.
  • Satin or satin matte finishes are perfect for normal to dry skin.

Cons

  • Not recommended for oily skin since the moisturizer makes oily areas even shinier.
  • Liquid foundations aren’t suitable for on-the-go touch ups unless you have a small sample bottle.

Tinted Moisturizers

Pros

  • A tinted moisturizer covers up uneven areas and offers light coverage.
  • Tinted moisturizer is great for warm months when little coverage is needed.

Cons

  • Tinted moisturizer works best for women with healthy skin.
  • Even if a tinted moisturizer has SPF, use sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or more for additional protection.

Compact Cream to Powder Foundations

Pros

  • You can blend cream to powder foundations with a brush or sponge.
  • This foundation is portable and excellent for touch-ups.
  • Cream to powder foundation is best for normal, slightly dry or slightly oily skin.
  • Offers full to sheer coverage

Cons

  • The heaviest-looking foundation.
  • Not for excessively dry or oily skin, as it tends to accentuate those traits.

Find the Right Shade for Your Skin Tone

Match the foundation shade to the skin on your chest, not your face, to choose an accurate color. This method works best if you are careful about protecting your face with a good sunscreen.

Test a spot of foundation on the back of your hand and let it stay on your skin for a few minutes to see how it absorbs. Does it change color when it dries? You can check the color in natural sunlight – you don’t need to rely solely on the artificial store lighting or make-up mirror lights to give you an accurate appraisal of the shade.

Find the best foundation undertone by checking the color of the veins on your wrist. Blue or purple veins mean the foundation you choose should have cool undertones.

Check Out the Foundation’s Ingredients

Choose a foundation with salicylic acid if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Buy a foundation that contains SPF 15 sunscreen or more if you spend a lot of time outdoors and don’t want to use a separate sunscreen on your face.

Mineral foundation is made with minerals and may contain a minimum of chemical ingredients or no chemicals at all. It is usually applied with a fluffy brush. Ingredients in mineral foundation include some of the same ones you’ll find in other foundations, like zinc oxide, mica, and iron oxides.

Some women like to apply foundation primer before putting on the foundation. Foundation primer fills in the pores in your skin and allows the foundation to go on smoothly. It works the same way paint primer does. You can apply moisturizer before putting on foundation to get the same effect, but some women prefer primer. Experiment with both methods to see which one works best for you.

Wrapping Up

Finding the best foundation for your skin type can involve a bit of trial and error. However, if you follow our advice, you’ll likely save a good deal of money and locate your ideal product sooner. Best of luck!

Good luck to you this year!

All Surface Skin is Young Skin

New Live Episode

Human skin has three layers

• Epidermis:
Outermost layer of skin. Provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.

• Dermis:
Beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.

• Hypodermis:
The deeper subcutaneous tissue made of fat and connective tissue.

Only the epidermis is visible to the human eye. It is that miraculous outer skin layer that replenishes itself in a 30-day cycle.

The epidermis is that expendable layer of skin that protects the body from the external world. These epidermal skin cells take an environmental beating for 30 days before they retire and detach.

In that 30-day cycle a skin cell is born round and full of water which makes it young and translucent.

As each day passes and newer skin cells are made, the older skin cell is pushed closer to the outer surface of the epidermis.

As the skin cell pushes outward, the oldest skin cells (28-30 days old) have done their duty and detach from the outermost surface of the skin.

The goal of skincare is to maintain that skin cell to keep it full of water during its 30-day life.

The plumper and more hydrated the skin cell, the younger the appearance of skin. Advanced skin care is designed to do just that.

It is important not to overthink skin care as it is as basic as brushing our teeth. Done daily our teeth stay healthy.

Advanced skin care includes ingredients that attract and hold hydration into the surface skin cells.

Remember, young skin cells are round and full of water which makes them supple and translucent.

Two most important skin care steps to maximize the youthful appearance of your skin.

Use advanced skin care that includes ingredients that attract and hold hydration into the surface skin cells.

Encourage a healthy detachment/exfoliation of dead surface skin cells. This exposes the fresher, younger looking skin cells just underneath.

Disclaimer

I am simplifying this explanation so as to not compound the information.

There are additional concerns in maintaining a healthy skin cell life cycle. Let’s first learn how to maintain the basic hydration integrity of a skin cell before talking about protection. (SPF, antioxidants, etc)

Also, lifestyle, drinking water and diet are all great contributors to the health of our skin.

What attracts and keeps water in your skin

Sodium Hyaluronate
A powerful humectant that attracts and holds on to water, making it the ultimate skin moisturizer. This helps to hydrate skin and keep it moist and supple by binding up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Because it attracts and binds to water, it causes slight swelling. This swelling helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives skin a more youthful appearance. The added water reflects light better to physically make skin look younger.

What are exfoliators and why do we want to use them?

a Exfoliate-blog

Skin replenishes itself every 30 days. Once full grown, our body has less incentive to create skin cells at our previous growing-up rate.

Surface skin cells die but are still attached. They no longer hold water and light, and mask the brightness of the skin cells below.

The weekly removal/exfoliation of surface dead skin cells exposes the fresh living skin cells and promotes more rapid skin cell reproduction. This results in our skin behaving and looking like young translucent skin.

The instruction and advice I share with anyone who wants to exfoliate is this.

It is important to understand why this simple and inexpensive activity promotes younger looking skin.

By gently and consistently removing the build-up of surface dead skin cells, our body responds by making fresh new skin cells at a more rapid rate. Our skin begins to mimic its performance as when we were growing into maturity. You basically trick the skin to work harder. It is happy to do so because your skin wants to protect you by maintaining a healthy amount of surface skin cells. You just need to give your skin a reason.

a exfoliate 2How you exfoliate matters. Even though the surface layer of skin cells are dead, they are still attached. If you aggressively remove them by any means, a scrub, a wash cloth, a brush, this will only cause damage to your skin.

Think of exfoliation as an act of seduction or a massage. Gently and continually circle in an area until the dead skin cell loosens and voluntarily leaves the body. In this manner there is no tear on the surface of the skin and your skin cell regenerators happily replace the now removed dead skin cells.

If the dead skin cell is aggressively removed, a small tear occurs on the skin and the skin goes in to repair mode rather than replenish mode. This mean that along with cells renewing, clotting blood cells are also sent to that area and repair must take place before revealing the younger, fresher skin cells underneath.

For best results think slow and long when it comes to exfoliation.

Personal note: Of all the personal skin care methods and products, proper exfoliation is the most effective practice in always maintaining the smoothest, healthiest and young looking skin.

Here are my products that exfoliate and help promote better exfoliation.

Makeup Gourmet Live: S1. E6. The Sound of Airbrush

Apply airbrush with your ears, not your eyes.

This was my biggest takeaway when I first learned airbrush makeup 7 years ago this month.

After practicing makeup artistry for 25 years, and teaching others how to apply makeup, it was absolutely thrilling to learn a new form of makeup application.

I had seen airbrush being applied in Sephora and I thought how hard can that be?

I saw a people holding this metal device and drawing circles on people’s faces and I thought, well, that might be fun.

What I learned was nothing I had previously seen that day in Sephora.

Mastery of a Tool

There is familiarity with a tool and then there’s mastery of a tool.

The way someone holds their tool will tell you if it is just something in their hand or part of their hand.

Great carpenters have that relationship with their tools. Great hairstylists have that relationship with their scissors. Great musicians have that relationship with their instrument. And great makeup artists have that relationship with their brushes, especially the airbrush.

Airbrush Technique

Some motor muscle habits are hard to break. That is why I was fortunate that the first time I used the airbrush I was trained in such a specific and highly effective manner.

The technique names don’t make much sense when you first hear them, but in practice make perfect sense.

The techniques are called dots & dashes. We worked on blank paper and perfected the result on paper.

With airbrush makeup that is all you are doing, either dots or dashes.

Not to undermine anyone who applies airbrush with a circular motion however I have found the dots & dashes technique superior.

When airbrush is applied in a circular motion the result is that your face is uniformly covered with makeup.

With dots & dashes, their is a purpose behind every dot and dash that selectively applies makeup specifically to the needs of the model.

Why Airbrush?

The idea of airbrush makeup is that it is the most skin like application possible.

Airbrush makeup became a necessity when high definition (HD) became a household name. The reality behind high definition is that the eye sees four times more visual information than in day-to-day life. This means visual information is amplified in high definition, and if makeup is just a little too much in person, it is four times too much in high definition. Airbrush solves that dilemma.

Because the mist of airbrush is so fine, you are not able to see it go on the skin when applied. This is why you apply airbrush with your ears, not your eyes. You learn to hear how much product is being delivered from the airbrush so you know when enough is enough.

At my last airbrush makeup wedding party application I had a new assistant working with me to clean my airbrush in between clients. She remarked afterwards, I don’t know how you can see what you’re doing because from where I was sitting I couldn’t see anything happening when you were applying the airbrush. Her statement was validation completely of the mantra:  apply with your ears and not your eyes. Something is definitely happening when you apply airbrush, but it is not until you step away from the model that you can see the results.

Is airbrush better than regular foundation?

As a purist I always want to say no. As a realist I must say yes.

No makeup brush other than the airbrush can do what the airbrush can do.

This is why airbrush makeup is a big buzz word for wedding makeup.

The information out there is that you have to have airbrush if you want to look your best.

I don’t believe that is true. 95% of my bridal makeup has been done with traditional makeup and brides look and feel great and tell me so.

The difference is these days photographers and videographers are using high-definition lenses. What we see in person is not what we see in digital imagery. This is where airbrush makes a huge difference.

In person, an airbrush makeup still has an advantage over traditional makeup. Skin appears smoother, and if applied correctly, less ‘made-up’.

In high definition photos and videos there is no question that airbrush handles the HD visual information overload more gracefully than traditional makeup.

Is airbrush practical for everyday self application?

I don’t believe so. There is a constant stream of cool air when airbrush is being applied. Your face needs to be 100% calm without any tensing whatsoever. This is best achieved with eyes closed and calm thoughts.

I know there are people who apply airbrush to themselves everyday. And for a majority of the face their application may come out okay, but for those tight areas around the eyes and nose, it becomes impossible with the blowing of the air.

Makeup Gourmet Makeup Training Philosophy

As with any higher skill, practice, practice, practice.

You will learn what you need to know.

It is up to you to have makeup artistry become second nature.

This means doing makeup on everyone you know, over and over again.

This means imitating looks from makeup images to which you aspire.

This means figuring things out.

Master musicians play basic scales every day.

Ballerinas do 8 plies in every position every day.

This is said not as intimidation. It is said as a teacher to a student.

I can teach you what to do. It is up to you to master it.

If you are wondering when is the best time to start…
