Fall is the best time to start using retin-a.

First– If you are a candidate for Retin-A , now is the best time to start your treatment.

Second– what is Retin-A and what does it do?

Third– Are you a candidate?

First– now is the best time to start your treatment.

Using any kind of retinoid requires no direct sunlight.!

Not only is retinoid-treated skin super-sensitive to UV rays and likely to burn, but the sunlight also makes the product less effective.

That’s why dermatologists strongly recommend putting these products on your face before bed and using a sunscreen every morning.

Starting early fall, there is less daytime sunlight, and the sunlight is traveling from a farther more angled direction, and thus less intense.

Second–what is Retin-A and what does it do?

Let’s get the terms out of the way.

Retin-A, the drug known generically as retinoic acid or tretinoin.

Tretinoin is derived from vitamin A.

Tretinoin is the most common prescription retinoid. Retinoid is another term for Retin-A.

Retin-A is the brand name for tretinoin used to treat acne and specifically cystic acne.

Now

In the 1960’s, pharmaceutical researchers began to look for ways to increase the availability of vitamin A. They learned how to imitate the process the liver uses to transform the retinyl esters in food into retinol for use in the cells. They also learned that retinol could be treated to create forms of two forms of vitamin A that are even more available to the skin, retinal and trans-retinoic acid. The skin can use tretinoin as soon as it is absorbed, without enzymatic transformation.

When Retin-A was first used for acne scarring, the results on the whole were no less than steller.

Not only did the acne scars appear to fade or go away completely, the skin re-texturized to a much smoother surface.

What was the reason?

Regular use of a retinoid product increases the amount of new collagen formed, research has found, and that new collagen will last for years.

Collagen is what gives skin its structure, firmness and elasticity. Repeated sun exposure breaks down collagen and, with age, cells produce less and less collagen to repair the damage. Skin wrinkles, sags and loses fullness.

“To my knowledge, this is the only drug for which there has been crystal-clear demonstration that it works on the molecular level,” said Dr. John J. Voorhees, the chairman of the dermatology department at the medical school of the University of Michigan.

Retin-A does double duty in helping to boost collagen. According to research at Michigan, it has the potential to stop photoaging before it starts. “The retinoids prevent the rise of collagenase after UV exposure,” Dr. Voorhees said. Collagenase is what breaks down collagen.

And then even more unexpected results appeared from the topical use of Retin-A.

Retin-A can improve skin texture and fade dark spots and freckles because it causes skin cells to turn over more rapidly. It shrinks dilated pores and improves cell turnover within the pores so they are less likely to clog and become blackheads and whiteheads.

Retin-A users reported improvements in skin texture, including diminished wrinkles and brown spots. In 1988, Dr. Voorhees and his colleagues at Michigan published the first double-blind study of Retin-A’s effect on photodamaged skin and found that all 30 patients who completed the 16-week study showed statistically significant improvement.

The results are not just cosmetic. Dr. Voorhees said that retinoids have been used to treat precancerous skin cells. Studies show that after two years of use, those abnormal cells returned to normal.

“There is so much historical evidence that this ingredient works better than anything else,” said Dr. Joel L. Cohen, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado.  “It actually works to remodel skin on a cellular level,” Dr. Cohen said.

The Bad News

The problem with Retin-A is that it may actually make skin look worse — with redness, flakiness and peeling — for up to eight weeks. “But by 24 weeks, patients will see dramatic, marked improvements,” Dr. Lee said.

Doctors generally recommend using no more than a pea-size dab for the entire face. They advise using the product once every three nights (or once a week if skin feels irritated) for a couple of weeks, then every other night, eventually working up to every night if the skin can handle it.

More is not better.  You only need a pea-size amount for your entire face, Graber says. Slathering on retinoid creams will not only cause you to quickly use up your supply, but it can also cause redness, dryness and irritation. Even when used judiciously, retinoids can be quite drying. That’s why Graber recommends a moisturizer just before bed.

Dr. Cohen cautions that Retin-A is not recommended for pregnant women or people with rosacea (a condition that causes skin redness). He said it is wise to limit its use with other potential irritants, like glycolic acids and vitamin C. Many doctors recommend applying a moisturizer over Retin-A (especially the generic versions) to help soothe skin, but suggest first waiting at least 20 minutes for the product to be absorbed.

Doctors also warn that newly irritated skin requires vigilant sun protection, and there are some concerns that waxing while using Retin-A may tear the skin.

 All in All

“I can’t say there’s anything on the horizon that will rival Retin-A,” Dr. Cohen said. “It’s exciting to see all the research going into this area, but kind of funny that the thing we’re still recommending most is something that’s 35 years old.”

sidenote
Retin-A vs Retinol

Retinol, a less potent form of Retin-A, also has some strong science to support its effectiveness.

It is found in hundreds of OTC skin care products today.

Retinol minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, bolster skin’s thickness and elasticity, slow the breakdown of collagen (which helps keep skin firm), and lighten brown spots caused by sun exposure. Retinol is present in my Age Defying Serum,  Applying it first before moisturizer allows it to go deeper and thusly more effective.

Third– Are you a candidate?

Only you know what results you want from advanced skin care and doctor prescribed skin care.

My guess is after reading this you already know if you want to be a candidate.

My suggestion is if you want to use Retin-A, see a trusted dermatoligist who has a history of  of both cosmetological and dermatological experience.

I have included more specific info below in a summary for those who seek it.

My Two Cents

Having seen both the good and the bad of Retin-A with my clients (I have never used it, only retinol), there is enough tested knowledge for proper usage that warrants using Retin-A if/when you decide this is a course of action you want to take.

Retin-A is to be taken seriously. It is a serious topical, that when used appropriately, can offer amazing and long lasting results.

Along with the proper usage amount as a key to success, my biggest warning is sun exposure.

As Retin-A makes skin so highly sun sensitive, it is no joke to not allow ANY direct sunlight when you use this product.

The saddest irony is when someone is using Retin-A to reduce hyper-pigmentation (patches of darkness or large brown spots) only to add to the presence of hyper-pigmentation due to sun exposure.

Hyper-pigmentation activated by the presence of Retin-A is a much more permanent situation and increasingly more difficult to eliminate.

Take all the warnings seriously and you should have a healthy, happy experience if you so choose to be a candidate for the tolical use of Retin-A.

Here is more info for those who seek it.

Summary:

  • Retin-A has been around since the 1960’s as a prescription treatment for acne. In the last few years, however, a form of Retin-A known as tretinoin topical has been available over the counter in the United States.
  • Tretinoin topical opens up clogged pores. The 0.05% strength you can get over the counter usually only open smaller cysts.
  • Neither Retin-A nor tretinoin topical gets rid of all your blemishes. It usually gets rid of about 50% of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.
  • Tretinoin topical is slightly more effective on fair skin than on dark skin, but it does not cause inflammatory pigmentation on any skin type.
  • You can combine tretinoin topical with benzoyl peroxide and other skin care products for greater effect.
  • Be sure to use sunscreen when you are using tretinoin topical.
  • Get rid of the rest of your blemishes by following a systematic approach to acne skin care like Exposed Skin Care.

How Retin-A Works

Vitamin A is well known for its importance to the skin. Without enough vitamin A in the diet, the skin dries out and becomes inflamed. Vitamin A has to be absorbed from food, but the form of vitamin A in food has to be chemically transformed by the human body into the forms that regulate the growth of the skin.

Tretinoin is not just a vitamin. It is a hormone. It can activate specific sequences of DNA in the chromosomes of skin cells. The result of activating DNA in the skin has three effects:

  1. Tretinoin increases the production of skin cells in the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, so that it grows stronger.
  2. Tretinoin causes the compaction of skin cells in the epidermis so that it grows thinner.
  3. Tretinoin increases the production of glycosaminoglycans so that the skin lays down collagen fibers in a orderly fashion.

Tretinoin rejuvenates the skin. The skin grows more rapidly and pulls away from pores, allowing them to open and drain. The thin skin over acne cysts breaks open and lets them drain without need for lancing or surgery. Thickening of the skin can even out smooth lines and growth of skin can obscure the borders around rough skin.

The problem with tretinoin is that it causes the skin to open where it is healthy as well as where it is sick. The skin between cysts can be red and inflamed. The rapid growth of the skin can also, ironically, increase the number and activity of sebaceous glands that make oily, waxy sebum. New pores can clog even while old cysts open.

Another problem with tretinoin is that it makes the skin thinner before it makes the skin thicker. It makes the skin more susceptible to sunburn, and increases the likelihood of skin injury when it is waxed for hair removal. (If you have to have hair removed, threading will not injure the skin.)

Should You Try Tretinoin Topical?

It is no longer necessary to get a prescription for the form Retin-A known as tretinoin topical. Even though it costs as much as US $80 for one-half ounce (14 grams), tretinoin topical only costs 10% to 20% of the price of a visit to the dermatologist and a prescription for Retin-A. It is not necessary to have blood tests to monitor for potential toxicity of tretinoin topical because only tiny amounts of the medication are absorbed through the skin. Any formulation of tretinoin topical that uses microsphere technology will be absorbed more slowly and do more good for the skin with fewer side effects.

What kind of results can you expect from tretinoin topical?

It’s important to understand that tretinoin topical will not get rid of all of your blemishes. People who have fair skin usually have 60% fewer pimples and 50% fewer blackheads and whiteheads after eight weeks. People who have dark skin typically have about 50% fewer pimples and 40% fewer blackheads and whiteheads after eight weeks—if not other treatments are used.

Variations In Ways to Use Over-the-Counter Tretinoin Topical

Some people use both tretinoin topical and benzoyl peroxide. Tretinoin is used to open the skin and benzoyl peroxide is used to kill acne bacteria as they are being released from deep pores. The effects of the two products are additive, but the side effects of the two products are also additive. Both benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin topical increase sensitivity to sunburn, so it is essential to use sunscreen during treatment.

Some people use both tretinoin topical and glycolic acid. One study even suggests that they are safe for dark skin—but be careful.  Use glycolic acid as a skin peel and rinse it off your skin before applying tretinoin topical. Be sure to use sunscreen if you use either product on your skin, especially if you have dark skin.

In the North America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, you need a prescription to get products that combine Retin-A and antibiotics. Usually products that combine tretinoin topical and clindamycin get the best results. Adding an antibiotic will get rid of about 20% more pimples and blemishes.

When tretinoin topical causes skin irritation, you can see your physician for a prescription for adapalene (marketed as Differin, Teva, and Pimpal). Tretinoin topical is available over-the-counter (and from Amazon) in the USA in concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.05%, but it’s usually best to try the 0.05% strength first. If you experience skin irritation, then switch to a lower strength.

A word about trend colors

With each season comes a fashion color dictate. This dictate comes from a council that agrees upon colors for each season years in advance.

It allows time for designers, manufacturers, and retailers to plan ahead and be on the same ‘fashion page’.

Colors of the season may seem arbitrary, however they are a well thought out design to keep fashion moving forward.

For those who enjoy not only wearing season appropriate makeup and wardrobe and want to wear this season’s color palette, it is good to know the palette. This video shares a colorful example of fall/winter 2017 colors.

This fall makeup video is an excerpt from my Makeup Gourmet TV show.

I prefer to share videos when it comes to showing how to do makeup

as makeup is highly visual, both applied and in the application.

Here is my most recent episode on Makeup Gourmet Live.

I share this as it asks the question: ‘What is fall color?’

I urge you venture into some new colors and fall forward into this season of transition.

Fall – Color In Transition. Makeup Gourmet Live S2. E1.

Color in Transition

Disclaimer: However you want to wear your makeup, and the colors you choose to use, is obviously entirely up to you.  I find the ‘Rules of Makeup’ restricting and often contradictory. This week’s blog is meant to share some reasons for fall colors. How you apply your makeup does not need to change (unless you want it to). This is a discussion of colors that you may transition into from your current makeup color wardrobe. It is that simple to have your makeup transition with the seasons.

Fall & spring are the 2 best examples of nature leading the way as it applies to makeup and fashion.

Both seasons deliver a dramatic shift in both foliage and the light of day.

As fall approaches, nature experiences a deepening of color and daylight.

Although subtle up to now, once we pass the fall equinox, light will soften more rapidly during the day, as will the total hours of daylight. (Northern hemisphere perspective. The opposite happens in the southern hemisphere).

With less light there is less contrast of color, and color can appear muted.

This effect translates into the transitional colors for makeup and wardrobe.

Quick Styling Deconstruction

Whether we are conscious of it or not, we choose what to wear and how to wear it based on:

  • Weather
  • Time of Day
  • Destination

We do this to be comfortable and to be appropriate (or not, depending on your personality).

Like spring, the season of fall provides a clear shift of color, light and temperature.

Take this shift (color, light and temperature) and apply it to your makeup colors and you easily and stylishly transition with the season.

Here is a visual example of the transition of color, light and temperature.

Transition the color, light and temperature of your makeup wardrobe to reflect the season in which you find yourself.

Makeup Gourmet Live S1 E10: Total Solar Eclipse: Contour

Shadows & Highlights

In honor of the dramatic solar light show on Monday August 21, 2017, the last episode of the Summer Season of Makeup Gourmet Live is dedicated to the rare Total Solar Eclipse.

We will be treated to a grand example of shadow & light which is an essential component to makeup generally and contour specifically.

heightening angles and shapes of our face has primitive roots. What fascinates me is how this primal style is often used now as an undercoat to beauty and Fashion makeup.

Historically astral events like a solar eclipse also triggered fear and doom alongside hope and joy.

I wonder what connection, if any, is there between primitive face paint and modern contour makeup.

Anyway…

The techniques used on the women in the above images are primarily reserved for photo shoots, fashion runway, film and video.

Thankfully, contour is so much easier (and so much less product) than those images.

The same concept we use to minutely contour our eyes, we enlarge to contour our face.

The primary area of contour for most makeup is the underside of the cheeks. This creates a heightened lift to the cheekbone and slim the face.

Other parts of the face subject to contour are the nose, jawline and forehead.

In the Face with a Heart technique, I refer to contour as where the face turns the corner.

The red arrows indicate the heart line which is a straight line that borders the outer corner of the lips and eyes.

Within these 2 lines are your main attractions, eyes and lips. To heighten contour it is best to keep the skin within these heart lines clear of any coloring excluding foundation, powder corrector/concealer.

The blue arrows indicate where the face ‘turns the corner’.

Here is where shading/contouring begins. Blush, contour, bronzer all live outside the heart lines, and in the best scenario, rest just outside the heart lines.

These contrast colors outside the heart line heightens the contour effect. It is, in essence, how to highlight the heart of the Face.

The best way for me to share contour techniques is to share this video tutorial contour playlist.

Here are 20 short contour tutorials on faces of all ages, ethnicities and makeup intensities.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a video worth?

Enjoy!

Getting eye shadow in the right place is mandatory for great eye makeup. As the intensity of the look increases, the more crucial it is to get color in the right place.

We will use this same anatomical placement of eye shadow for the smoky eye, only where the highest intensity (darkest) eye shadow color goes has changed.

SMOKY EYE MAKEUP DEFINED:

Smoky is a technique, not a color. It is a shadowy gradient, extending away from the eye line, dark to light.

Any combination of colors may constitute a smoky eye.

Smoky Eye Works On Everyone

One cool thing about a Smoky Eye is that translates to all eye shapes, sizes and ages. Done properly, it is truly one of the easiest eye makeup looks to do that can really be a show stopper if that is the intention.

High Contrast Smoky Eye

Smoky, however, does not necessarily mean dramatic (high contrast). Smoky is a technique that may also be used with any variety of contrast and color.

Low Contrast Smoky Eye

Medium Contrast Smoky Eye

A Colorful Smoky Eye

As you can see, the Smoky Eye technique manifests itself with a wide variety of results, depending on the colors and intensities used.

What a Smoky Eye is not

A High Contour Eye is often referred to as a Smoky Eye, but it is not.

A High Contour Eye is an extension of a Classic Contour Eye and looks like this.

The crease color is blended up onto the outer brow bone and creates a heightened look to to the eye. The ball of the eye still shows a lighter contrast intensity to the crease. We will learn this in a later episode.

Here are 3 video tutorial versions of a smoky eye to better familiarize yourself with what is really a smoky eye.

Classic Contour Eyes

First Why:

Screenshot 2015-07-14 12.24.39To maximize shape, volume, depth, and color of the eye. Eye shadow has an infinite level of possibilities, so it is best to understand the principles of eye shadow which will help create the most authentic shape of any eye. Eye shadow is the best way to maximize the shape of your eyelid.

Principles of eye shadow:

• Lighter shades bring shape forward
• Darker shades sink shapes deeper back (recede)
• Shimmer reflects light and pulls focus to it and may bring shape forward
• Matte absorbs light and diminishes reflection and may sink shape deeper back.

Now How:

There are three basic parts of an eyelid that separate and define the shape of the eye.

They are:
Screenshot 2015-07-14 12.23.05

Ball: The ball of the eye is the skin that has the eyeball immediately underneath it when the eyes are closed.
Bone: The bone is any part under the eyebrow that has bone underneath it.Screenshot 2015-07-14 12.23.33
• Crease: The crease, and this is important, is the area under the curvature of the brow bone where it meets the ball of the eye. It is a sunken groove that is highly rounded as the eye sockets are highly rounded.

Eye shadow contourThink of this crease as a groove or track where your contour brush is designed to slip into and follow the natural curvature of the eye socket where it meets the eyeball. When applying eye shadow (and most color for that matter) always add and buildup to the desired effect. Try to avoid getting too much of anything on the face and having to rub it down or off. That is the essence of makeup gone wrong. As long as the intensity is always building up away from the face, the makeup appears connected to the person wearing it and gives the greatest control when applying any look.

All Surface Skin is Young Skin

New Live Episode

Human skin has three layers

• Epidermis:
Outermost layer of skin. Provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.

• Dermis:
Beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.

• Hypodermis:
The deeper subcutaneous tissue made of fat and connective tissue.

Only the epidermis is visible to the human eye. It is that miraculous outer skin layer that replenishes itself in a 30-day cycle.

The epidermis is that expendable layer of skin that protects the body from the external world. These epidermal skin cells take an environmental beating for 30 days before they retire and detach.

In that 30-day cycle a skin cell is born round and full of water which makes it young and translucent.

As each day passes and newer skin cells are made, the older skin cell is pushed closer to the outer surface of the epidermis.

As the skin cell pushes outward, the oldest skin cells (28-30 days old) have done their duty and detach from the outermost surface of the skin.

The goal of skincare is to maintain that skin cell to keep it full of water during its 30-day life.

The plumper and more hydrated the skin cell, the younger the appearance of skin. Advanced skin care is designed to do just that.

It is important not to overthink skin care as it is as basic as brushing our teeth. Done daily our teeth stay healthy.

Advanced skin care includes ingredients that attract and hold hydration into the surface skin cells.

Remember, young skin cells are round and full of water which makes them supple and translucent.

Two most important skin care steps to maximize the youthful appearance of your skin.

Use advanced skin care that includes ingredients that attract and hold hydration into the surface skin cells.

Encourage a healthy detachment/exfoliation of dead surface skin cells. This exposes the fresher, younger looking skin cells just underneath.

Disclaimer

I am simplifying this explanation so as to not compound the information.

There are additional concerns in maintaining a healthy skin cell life cycle. Let’s first learn how to maintain the basic hydration integrity of a skin cell before talking about protection. (SPF, antioxidants, etc)

Also, lifestyle, drinking water and diet are all great contributors to the health of our skin.

What attracts and keeps water in your skin

Sodium Hyaluronate
A powerful humectant that attracts and holds on to water, making it the ultimate skin moisturizer. This helps to hydrate skin and keep it moist and supple by binding up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Because it attracts and binds to water, it causes slight swelling. This swelling helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives skin a more youthful appearance. The added water reflects light better to physically make skin look younger.

What are exfoliators and why do we want to use them?

a Exfoliate-blog

Skin replenishes itself every 30 days. Once full grown, our body has less incentive to create skin cells at our previous growing-up rate.

Surface skin cells die but are still attached. They no longer hold water and light, and mask the brightness of the skin cells below.

The weekly removal/exfoliation of surface dead skin cells exposes the fresh living skin cells and promotes more rapid skin cell reproduction. This results in our skin behaving and looking like young translucent skin.

The instruction and advice I share with anyone who wants to exfoliate is this.

It is important to understand why this simple and inexpensive activity promotes younger looking skin.

By gently and consistently removing the build-up of surface dead skin cells, our body responds by making fresh new skin cells at a more rapid rate. Our skin begins to mimic its performance as when we were growing into maturity. You basically trick the skin to work harder. It is happy to do so because your skin wants to protect you by maintaining a healthy amount of surface skin cells. You just need to give your skin a reason.

a exfoliate 2How you exfoliate matters. Even though the surface layer of skin cells are dead, they are still attached. If you aggressively remove them by any means, a scrub, a wash cloth, a brush, this will only cause damage to your skin.

Think of exfoliation as an act of seduction or a massage. Gently and continually circle in an area until the dead skin cell loosens and voluntarily leaves the body. In this manner there is no tear on the surface of the skin and your skin cell regenerators happily replace the now removed dead skin cells.

If the dead skin cell is aggressively removed, a small tear occurs on the skin and the skin goes in to repair mode rather than replenish mode. This mean that along with cells renewing, clotting blood cells are also sent to that area and repair must take place before revealing the younger, fresher skin cells underneath.

For best results think slow and long when it comes to exfoliation.

Personal note: Of all the personal skin care methods and products, proper exfoliation is the most effective practice in always maintaining the smoothest, healthiest and young looking skin.

Here are my products that exfoliate and help promote better exfoliation.

Makeup Gourmet Live: S1. E6. The Sound of Airbrush

Apply airbrush with your ears, not your eyes.

This was my biggest takeaway when I first learned airbrush makeup 7 years ago this month.

After practicing makeup artistry for 25 years, and teaching others how to apply makeup, it was absolutely thrilling to learn a new form of makeup application.

I had seen airbrush being applied in Sephora and I thought how hard can that be?

I saw a people holding this metal device and drawing circles on people’s faces and I thought, well, that might be fun.

What I learned was nothing I had previously seen that day in Sephora.

Mastery of a Tool

There is familiarity with a tool and then there’s mastery of a tool.

The way someone holds their tool will tell you if it is just something in their hand or part of their hand.

Great carpenters have that relationship with their tools. Great hairstylists have that relationship with their scissors. Great musicians have that relationship with their instrument. And great makeup artists have that relationship with their brushes, especially the airbrush.

Airbrush Technique

Some motor muscle habits are hard to break. That is why I was fortunate that the first time I used the airbrush I was trained in such a specific and highly effective manner.

The technique names don’t make much sense when you first hear them, but in practice make perfect sense.

The techniques are called dots & dashes. We worked on blank paper and perfected the result on paper.

With airbrush makeup that is all you are doing, either dots or dashes.

Not to undermine anyone who applies airbrush with a circular motion however I have found the dots & dashes technique superior.

When airbrush is applied in a circular motion the result is that your face is uniformly covered with makeup.

With dots & dashes, their is a purpose behind every dot and dash that selectively applies makeup specifically to the needs of the model.

Why Airbrush?

The idea of airbrush makeup is that it is the most skin like application possible.

Airbrush makeup became a necessity when high definition (HD) became a household name. The reality behind high definition is that the eye sees four times more visual information than in day-to-day life. This means visual information is amplified in high definition, and if makeup is just a little too much in person, it is four times too much in high definition. Airbrush solves that dilemma.

Because the mist of airbrush is so fine, you are not able to see it go on the skin when applied. This is why you apply airbrush with your ears, not your eyes. You learn to hear how much product is being delivered from the airbrush so you know when enough is enough.

At my last airbrush makeup wedding party application I had a new assistant working with me to clean my airbrush in between clients. She remarked afterwards, I don’t know how you can see what you’re doing because from where I was sitting I couldn’t see anything happening when you were applying the airbrush. Her statement was validation completely of the mantra:  apply with your ears and not your eyes. Something is definitely happening when you apply airbrush, but it is not until you step away from the model that you can see the results.

Is airbrush better than regular foundation?

As a purist I always want to say no. As a realist I must say yes.

No makeup brush other than the airbrush can do what the airbrush can do.

This is why airbrush makeup is a big buzz word for wedding makeup.

The information out there is that you have to have airbrush if you want to look your best.

I don’t believe that is true. 95% of my bridal makeup has been done with traditional makeup and brides look and feel great and tell me so.

The difference is these days photographers and videographers are using high-definition lenses. What we see in person is not what we see in digital imagery. This is where airbrush makes a huge difference.

In person, an airbrush makeup still has an advantage over traditional makeup. Skin appears smoother, and if applied correctly, less ‘made-up’.

In high definition photos and videos there is no question that airbrush handles the HD visual information overload more gracefully than traditional makeup.

Is airbrush practical for everyday self application?

I don’t believe so. There is a constant stream of cool air when airbrush is being applied. Your face needs to be 100% calm without any tensing whatsoever. This is best achieved with eyes closed and calm thoughts.

I know there are people who apply airbrush to themselves everyday. And for a majority of the face their application may come out okay, but for those tight areas around the eyes and nose, it becomes impossible with the blowing of the air.

I am going to share the basics of using airbrush makeup on my Makeup Gourmet Live YouTube show Tuesday July 18th 2017. It will be recorded as well so you may watch it anytime. It will give you great insight into the subtlety and mystery of the airbrush.
