The Power of Red

Red lips grab attention.

Historically, red lips are a statement of power. From Cleopatra to Lady Gaga, red lips continue to dominate.

Red lips work year round and are especially appropriate in the months leading into winter.

For those of you who wear red lips already, you have found that red that works for you.

For those who don’t and want to, the following is a breakdown of reds and how to wear them without feeling as if you are wearing a neon sign on your face.

What shade of red is right for you?

As with any color, there are many shades of that color.

As red is a primary color, it is the ratio of the blue to yellow in a red that mostly dictates the red.

Here are examples of red lip shades.

True Red

A balance of the blue and yellow with the red.

Blue Red

More blue than yellow with the red

Warm Red

More yellow than blue with the red

Brown Red

Red mixed with brown

Burgundy Red

A secondary color purple mixed with red

Vamp Red

Black mixed with red

Besides shades, there are also finishes which each project a different emotional response.

So which shade is right for you?

With red lips, try to match the temperature of your lips with your wardrobe and accessories.

When in doubt, wear true red. It is balanced and goes with everything.

If wearing gold accessories, wear a warm red.

If wearing silver colored accessories wear a cool temperature lip such as blue red and burgundy red.

If wearing a blue dress, wear a blue red.

If wearing a yellow dress, wear a warm red.

Beyond shade, pick the finish depending on your mood.

Tips on picking reds and getting used to seeing red on you.

Now that you know what shade and finish of red you want based on wardrobe and mood, here’s how to further know which red appeals to you.

Always put possible lip colors on the pad of a fingertip and hold your finger over your lips and look into a well lit mirror.

Also hold finger pad over your garment and next to your accessories to make sure the colors like each other.

If you like what you see, time to put the color on.

if you are hesitant to put the red straight on your lips, start with a more comfortable lip color you already use and then mix a little of the new red into that color on your lip.

This is a fantastic way to gradually grow more comfortable and confident in wearing red lips.
