Blush. A Flush of Color.

blush flush

Blush needs to appear as if your skin is manufacturing that color, not wearing it.

In order to do that, it is essential to examine how a natural blushing of the skin appears.

To my eye there is a surge of color in the skin that grows more intense as it moves toward the center of the face.

For both cream and powder blush, here are full-proof techniques to achieve a flawless flush of color.

Cream Blush

Cheeks_Step_4_Cream_Blush

• Put cream blush on tip of middle finger

• Make 3 dots along the cheekbone in the exact same places described in the powder blush section and in the same order.

• By default, the first dot will have more color and the consequent dots will have less as the amount of cream blush lessens with each dot.

Makeup_Gourmet_Blend_Cream_Blush

• Starting at the first dot closest to the heart line and with a clean finger, use the palm side of your finger and blend blush by working in a circular motion.

• Slowly work back to the hair line.

• This technique shall disperse the cream blush evenly and smoothly.

For skin that tends to absorb cheek color rapidly, it is suggested to layer the cream and powder blush.

In this scenario, apply the cream blush first and the powder blush over the cream blush using the exact application techniques as described above.

Cream Blush Video Tutorial

Powder blush: 3-2-1

• Pat the tip of the blush brush on to the blush color.

• Tap off the excess

• Smile or ask model to smile.

• The part of the cheek that rises up the most is where the first blush is applied. We call this the ‘energy’ of the cheek (this area is often called the apple of the cheek. As this placement is more precise, the energy of the cheek is preferred.) This means the place where the face moves the most in the cheek area.

Makeup_Gourmet_Powder_Blush_3_2_1

• For placement, the first blush application goes along and outside the heart line in the energy of the cheek. This will further define and enhance the heart of the face.

• In a systematic fashion, pat the brush 3 times in the energy of the cheek.

Makeup_Gourmet_Powder_Blush_3_2_1 (1)

• Now move up to the center of the cheekbone just along the top side of the contour application and pat 2 times.

• Next move back a little more towards the hairline and pat 1 time.

• Repeat this on the other side of the face.

Go back and forth from cheek to cheek until the desired intensity and balance is met.

How blush Contours

blush contour 2heartline

By strategically placing blush just outside the heart line, the brightness of the interior of the heart is enhanced in contrast to the blush just outside it.

As long as blush is outside the heart line, it will not compete with the eyes and lips and become a distraction.

This is good news for those who really like their blush. By using the 3-2-1 powder blush method, the result always appears natural to the skin and you can get away with a substantial amount of blush without throwing off the balance of your look.

Bronzer

Bronzer further redefines the shape of the face while adding a ‘first sun’ look.Bronzer_Application_MakeupGourmet_com

‘First sun’ means that color you start to notice on your skin soon after being in the sun.

Bronzer can mimic the appearance of a tan without ever being obvious. This means it works for those who tan naturally to those who never tan (do not allow skin to see sun) or are unable to tan (sun exposure goes straight to a red burn).

Bronzer_Application_2_MakeupGourmet_comTo know where to apply bronzer, look in the mirror and lift your chin up. Where you see light wrap on your face first is where you will naturally tan first.

These areas that get light first are primarily the crown of the forehead and the shelf of the cheekbone. Secondarily light strikes the bridge of nose and chin.

Apply bronzer the same way, primarily on crown of the forehead and the shelf of the cheekbone. Then apply secondarily (meaning half as much) on the bridge of nose and chin.

By wrapping bronzer around the forehead and onto the shelf of the cheekbone, the areas within the heart of the face appear brighter and lighter. Beyond bronzer looking pretty on its own, this added dimension to the face is helpful for those who want to lessen the appearance of a high forehead and/or a round face.

Bronzer is effective and appropriate for any age and ethnicity.

bronze trio

Just for sheer contrast, bronzer is effective for most skin tones except for medium-dark to dark skin tones. For these skin tones, using a highlight product rather than bronzer will have a nice contrasting effect.

Contour  Contour  Contour

Contour is all the ‘buzz’ in makeup talk these days.Screenshot 2016-07-20 10.50.33 copy

I even had a Sephora executive whisper in my ear “Contour is the next big thing”.

Contour is no secret, no ‘next big thing’, and really no big deal as far as how to apply it to yourself.

However, contour, when applied properly, can transform face shape to heighten your visual appeal.

Contour works literally ‘in the shadows’. It needs to be that unseen influence that heightens everything we want to highlight, mainly eyes and lips.

First off, what to use for contour.

The temperature of a shadow.

In the world of color temperature, the three most used terms are warm, cool, and neutral.

warm-cool-WC-copy6

neutral color wheel

All shadows are a cool color and can also appear neutral.

In order to simulate shadow on your face (contour), be sure the product you are using is neutral to cool in temperature.

The biggest mistake made is using bronzer as contour. Most bronzer contains some yellow and is therefore warm. A warm contour shadow is unnatural and thus looks artificial.

I use translucent powder as contour as it mimics skin tone best and the pigment is loose enough that it is easy to control the intensity of the application.

Where is the cheekbone?Screenshot 2016-07-20 11.00.38 copy

• Shelf- This is the top of the cheek bone where it first starts to round outward away from the center of the face and catches the most reflection of light.

• Crown- This is the outer edge of the cheek bone a quarter circle down from the shelf.

• Contour- This is where the cheek bone begins to roll back under from the crown. This is where contour is applied.

• Contour stops being applied at the base of the cheekbone as it rolls back down to meet the hollow of the cheek.

• Do not apply contour in the hollow of the cheek. This creates a sunken, unhealthy look. The purpose of contour is to lift the cheekbone and taper the face towards the heart of the face.

Cheeks_Step_1_Cheek_Contour

• Put a small amount of contour product on face contour brush.

• Start at the cheek and contour about one inch forward from the ear.

• Brush along the underside of cheekbone.

• For most anatomy, the brush goes towards the outer half of upper lip.

• Do not allow contour to pass the heart line.

• Apply methodically to both sides of the face to strike a balance. Go back and forth from side to side until balance is met.

Often after applying the contour, there are visible edges along the upper and lower borders of the contour application.

It is necessary to buff out these edges to make the contour appear natural.Cheeks_Step_2_Blend_Cheek_Contour

• Put translucent powder used to set the model’s foundation on the tip of a clean blush brush.

• Squeeze the base of the blush brush hairs to make the brush firmer.

• In a back and forth motion, buff along the upper and lower edge of the contour application to soften the edge of the application.

The Heart is Off limits

Screenshot 2016-07-13 15.16.32
One of the chief purposes of  Face with a Heart is to isolate eyes and lips to feature them as main attractions.

The first three steps in the Face with a Heart order of application is eyes, skin, then lips.

It is after the first 3 steps is where I say the Heart is off limits (except when using bronzer)

The heart of the face is the area within the red lines.

This ‘heart’ shape (the eyebrows being the top of the heart and then straight lines extending between the outer corner of the eyes and lips being the side of the heart) Is where lies your eyes and lips. This is the heart of the face.

Eyes and lips are your main attractions so we isolate them within a field of neutral skin tone so there are no facial coloring distractions within the ‘heart’ to take focus away from the eyes and lips.

This is a subtle distinction and goes unnoticed unless you train your eye to see it.

Here are some examples from public domain pro print work respecting this distinction:

heart line 2

heart line 3

Notice how the area inside the dotted line towards the nose is clear of any color/distractions.

Then notice how shading such as contour and blush start just outside this line.

This invisible heartline is the premise for maximizing your eyes and lips as well as face shape.

Think of the invisible heartline as where the face turns the corner. It is just outside the heartline where shading and blush begin to pull the area outside the heartline back and away from the heart of the face.

Here are examples of my clients using the Face with a Heart technique to reduce distractions and enhance attractions.

Most people apply their makeup generally, and they look generally good. Let’s face it, a little mascara brightens up the eyes.

However there are some people who apply their makeup specifically, and although we cannot put our finger on it, they look specifically good.

Face with a Heart is a clear and precise method to apply your makeup specifically. It clarifies all your questions about what goes where and why.

If you want to look specifically good without ever being overdone, Face with a Heart Mastering Authentic Beauty Makeup will  show you the way. Along with the book, there are online videos to visualize the application so you too may master your makeup!

Super Summer Specials 2016

This bugs me.   Get This. Get That For Free!

Have you ever seen an offer where you get what you want, and you also get something you don’t want for free.

It appears to give greater value to what you are getting by getting more for free.

More often than not, the free thing is worth what you paid for it. 0!

I have shuddered to make such an offer as I only wish to offer true value with every correspondence I send.

lightbulb-web

Lightbulb on!

Instead of enticing you with free stuff, I decided to raise the value of what I already offer.

Makeup Gourmet currently pairs Value Bundles. Value Bundles are pairs of items that naturally go together. These Value Bundles are offered at a lower combined cost as a value to the Makeup Gourmet customer.

I believe in the Value Bundles as I painstakingly paired them to make your life a little easier and affordable.

lightbulb-idea

Here’s my crazy idea!

For the month of July, I selected a handful of popular Value Bundles and am making them Summer Specials. Instead of reducing the combined cost, I decided to give the lower cost item free!

I cannot do this forever and stay in business, I just wanted a way to make this kind of offer without insulting your intelligence by giving something of no value as a way to encourage a purchase.

These are GREAT offers. Check them out. Pass them around. This is good until July 31, 2016.

Gloss can be glaringly obvious and distracting when over used. Unless you are trending lips (what you want people to see first), here is some gloss advice.

lips_step_3_Lip_gloss

To maximize light reflection on the lips, apply vertically with the grain of the lip’s skin tissue. Light will bounce best off the lips when applied this way. Keep gloss slightly within the edge of the lip line to allow room for gloss spread, which inevitably happens when lips rub together.

Gloss Tips

One of the easiest, long-lasting and impact producing techniques
is to fill in lips with a lip pencil first…

…and then top with a clear or very sheer color lip gloss.

Hair gets in gloss

This is a pain. I always use to blame thick gloss until I understood the higher purpose of thick gloss.

Thin gloss evaporates quickly taking color with it. That is why thinner lip gloss needs to be reapplied so often.

Thicker gloss acts as an environmental seal by not evaporating quickly, and keeping lip color underneath it in place.

Press a very thin layer of a thicker gloss and color will last longer and hair will stick less to lips .

Please remember

Gloss has oil in it. Oil is used to remove makeup. If you spread gloss over lip color, it will break down that color very quickly. It is better to press gloss with a lip brush over lip pencil and/or lipstick than spread it around.

Lips: Part 2 – Tall Lips Are Full Lips

Makeup Gourmet Chris Scott’s  series of how-to video tutorials based on his #1 international best seller
Face with a Heart Mastering Authentic Beauty Makeup

Tall Lips Are Full Lips

Just as with eye makeup, there are multiple ways to approach lips.

To enhance your Face with a Heart think ‘Eyes Wide – Lips Tall’.

Many desire to have their lips appear more full and/or balanced in size between the upper and lower lip.

Most of these people do not want it to appear they have drawn lip liner outside their natural lip line to enhance the appearance of their lips.

Screenshot 2016-06-15 08.25.40

Let me share a little secret. The trick is to make lips appear more tall by enhancing the ‘pillow’ of the lip.

The pillow is the center of the mouth where lips are most full in the first place.

By enhancing the ‘pillow’ of the lips, lips appear more full without appearing falsely applied.

How:

Lip liner is used to define the shape of the lips. It can simultaneously re-define the shape of the lips plus provide asymmetrical correction.

Bottom Lip Liner

The concept is to make the bottom lip appear as a glass of water that is being tipped so that the water has come right up to the edge of the glass. It appears at any moment the water will spill out of the glass but it doesn’t.

Enhancing_lLp_Liner_Lower_lip_MakeupGourmet_com• Begin by using a lip pencil to enhance the center of the mouth.

• Trace along the natural lip line at the center of the bottom lip.

• Then allow the lip liner to drop just below the center of the lip line to create the appearance of fullness to the center of the bottom lip.

Lip_Liner_Bottom_lip_to_outer_corner_of_mouth_MakeupGourmet_com

• Where the bottom lip begins to curve upwards towards the outer corner of the mouth, sketch a strong straight line to the inside corner of the outer corners of the lips.

• Fill the interior of the liner into the lip a little to really connect the new shape liner to the lip.

• This illusion will push the center of the mouth more forward and keep lips from looking too wide.

Top Lip Liner

The concept here is to create a slightly swollen appearance to the upper lip from just outside the center ‘V’ to halfway down the upper lip. This will create height and fullness to the upper lip.

Lip_Liner_Upper_lip_center_Makeupgourmet_com

• Start by sketching in the ‘V’ shape at the center of the upper lip. Strive for symmetry.

• Next sketch the top lip line from the peak of the ‘V’ of the upper lip to the inside corner of the outer corners of the mouth.

• Then, if more fullness is desired, slightly round above the lip line from the peak of the ‘V’ to halfway down the upper lip.

• It is vital that the lip line appear connected to the actual lip line so build up from the existing lip line will create this effect successfully.

Lip_Liner_Fill_enhanced_liner_into_lips_MakeupGourmet_com

• Fill the interior of the liner into the lip a little to really connect the new shape liner to the lip.

• Finally, sketch with a lip brush along the lip liner to soften the interior edge and marry it to the lips.
