What is intuitive eating?

An article from Kaiser Permanente

Intuition is your ability to understand something without needing an explanation. You simply “know” it to be true.

Being able to listen to and understand your intuition is an important part of staying healthy. Your intuition can help you avoid danger, get medical attention when needed, and even help you get the sleep, exercise, and nutrients you need.

So, what happens when you use intuition to guide your eating habits? The result is intuitive eating — a way of listening to and understanding your body’s signals and needs and using them to guide how you eat.

How intuitive eating works

Often referred to as the “anti-diet,” the basis of intuitive eating is to let your intuition guide you on your food choices. This means no food is off-limits and there are no strict guidelines to follow. You eat when you’re hungry and don’t eat when you’re not. However, this doesn’t mean giving in to every craving and impulse. If you’re following intuitive eating practices, you would observe your cravings so you can determine where they came from and what it is your body may really need.

For example, you get an overwhelming craving for chocolate. Since eating chocolate can produce positive effects on your mood, this craving may be your body’s way of telling you it needs a quick mood boost. So, instead of reaching for a chocolate bar that might be full of sugar and may later leave you lacking energy, you may need a different mood-booster — like a brisk walk. So, instead of simply listening to your initial instinct, intuitive eating practices encourage you to dig deeper to discover the true meaning behind your thoughts and needs.

Overall, this approach can offer a healthy option to eating and enjoying food. Here are a few other points to consider.

Understanding the difference between physical hunger and emotional eating

Physical hunger is a physical and biological response your body has to being hungry. It can manifest as a growling stomach or feelings of irritability or fatigue. After you eat, these responses will go away.

Emotional eating is a need to eat that is driven by an emotional response. You may not be physically hungry, but you feel compelled to eat because you’re sad, or anxious, or bored. Emotional eating uses food to fill emotional needs.

Because emotional eating is not driven by your body’s need for nutrients, it can lead to overeating and making poor nutritional choices. You can avoid emotional eating with mindfulness. When you find yourself craving a comfort food, pause for a moment and ask yourself why you want it. Is your stomach rumbling or are you having a stressful day and feel like you need a reward? By simply taking a moment to ask yourself the question, you’re giving yourself a chance to make an informed choice for your body.

Eating until you’re satisfied — not full

Once you start eating it can take between 5 to 20 minutes to start to feel full. If you don’t stop eating until you feel full, then you may have already consumed too much food several minutes before you stopped eating. This can result in over-extending your recommended calorie intake for the day — and may even cause stomach pain and discomfort.

Instead of rushing through a meal, eat slowly and enjoy your food. Take time to experience your meal with as many of your senses as possible — how does it look or smell? You can even practice gratitude in each bite, feeling thankful for the meal.

As you eat, pay attention to how you feel. When you start to feel satisfied, slow down or even stop. You can always continue to eat if you’re still hungry.

Practicing healthy eating habits

Even though intuitive eating doesn’t include food restrictions, it doesn’t mean you should throw all healthy eating guidelines out the window. Your body still needs a balance of nutrient-rich, healthy foods.

You’ll want to make sure you provide your body with the foods it needs by eating a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Your plate should be colorful and balanced.

This also means being aware of consuming too much saturated and trans fats, added sugar, alcohol, and salt.

Being mindful

Pay attention to your eating habits. Are you a late-night snacker? Do you always order appetizers in addition to a big entree? Do you feel compelled to eat a bag of candy after a stressful meeting?

Keeping track of your eating habits can help you be conscious of where you might need to make adjustments. You can either take mental notes or write your observation down in your journal. Just remember: It’s not about tracking exactly what you ate. Instead, use your journal as a way to explore your thoughts, feelings, and impulses — and look for patterns or emotional eating triggers.

Reframing your thoughts

Because emotions and foods are often intertwined, it can help to reframe negative thoughts about food. Remember, food is meant to fuel your body so you can have the energy you need to thrive. For example, grabbing a cupcake when you’re sad may feel good in the moment, but it may not make you feel so great later.

However, if you do grab a cupcake because you’re trying to fill an emotional need and feel guilty afterward, try to quiet your inner critic as much as possible. Accept that the choice was made, let go of any shame or disappointment, and use the experience as an opportunity to re-affirm that you’re still committed to eating as healthy as possible. Also, remind yourself that it’s OK to enjoy a sweet treat. As always, moderation is key.

Bottom line

When done properly, the principles of intuitive eating can help you form healthy habits and enjoy the food you eat. If you need more guidance on healthy eating options, check out our online resources.

Optimism and Politics

I Want You To Be Happy As Well As Me

I am more an optimist than I am political. I want to think the best of everyone. I want everyone and everything to be truly happy.

I do not believe in a happiness that comes at the expense of anyone and anything. I want a balance of happiness.

If you are happy and I am happy, then we have a good thing going. If only one of us is happy at the expense of the other, then we are corrupted.

Corruption is like a lie that feels good. The first corruption may sting a little, however the longer the corruptor corrupts, the harder it becomes for them to see or feel the harm they create.

This is not a revelation. Corruption has always existed and we live with it.

The point is we are all alive now and need to step up to balance this hateful, hurtful, self-serving corruption that has spread its roots in the United States and the world. Personal sacrifices may need to be made. These sacrifices are for the better good.

If you are happy and I am happy, then we are doing something right. If not, we need to fix it.

I am an optimist. I want you to be happy as well as me. It is fair and true to our better selves. Let’s be our better selves.

I believe in voting. I believe in voting for the better collective good. When we all thrive…well, you finish this sentence for yourself.

Lessons on Looking Good

Learning from an Expert Makeup Artist

by Robin G. Murphy

In “Middle Age is the New Adolescence,” I described my difficulties with applying makeup in a way that looks good now that I’ve reached an age where my skin and features seem to be changing. The make-up habits I had developed didn’t seem to work well anymore. I asked for advice from friends, from Reddit, from Google, and ultimately I decided to schedule a make-up lesson with a professional. After a Google search for make-up artists who offer remote lessons, I connected with Chris Scott of Makeup Gourmet and scheduled my first virtual Zoom makeup lesson.

At the appointed time, I made sure I had good lighting, set up my laptop in the bathroom near my makeup mirror, and laid all my make-up on the counter. I was nervous. How would this work? Could he really see what I was doing and instruct me through Zoom?

Chris and I chatted for a bit and he shared that he has defined a tried-and-true formula for applying makeup that anyone can use with minor modifications every day — for casual fun, work, and formal occasions. This was just what I was looking for! I needed something that I knew would reliably look good every time.

Once he explained a little about himself and his approach, we dove into the tutorial. It was immediately clear that in his 30 years of doing makeup for models and celebrities as well as teaching fashion makeup, Chris has honed his eye and technique.

He asked me to show him my eyebrow pencil, and could immediately tell through the camera whether it was a product that would work. He asked me to draw a straight diagonal line on my eyebrow — I thought he was crazy — but he could immediately tell whether I had done it right, and when we finished with my eyebrows, they looked better than they ever had before.

It surprised me how easy it was to share what tool I was using, how I was using it, and get feedback through Zoom. Chris walked me through instructions on enhancing my eyebrows, applying eyeliner and eye shadow, correct my skin tone and covering imperfections, and choosing and applying lipstick. I came away with a look that took no more time to apply than I usually spent and wasn’t a heavier application of makeup — but made me look better and feel more self-assured.

Now I finally have confidence that I can apply makeup in a way that will reliably and consistently result in me feeling good about how I look. My big regret is that I didn’t do this when I was 20 years old! I’ve been wearing makeup nearly every day of my life for 30 years, and I now realize that every time I did it, my technique could have been much more effective.

If you’d like to learn more about Chris’s technique yourself, you have some options. Chris will do a free online consultation, which is a good place to start to find out if lessons are right for you. If so, there are several options available for lessons, including both individual and group lessons.

If in-person lessons aren’t for you, consider buying Chris’s book Face With a Heart: Mastering Authentic Beauty Makeup, which walks through his makeup technique in detail, and has online video tutorials which accompany it.

I can vouch that lessons on looking good or a book with clear instructions would be a great gift for a twenty-year-old with a lifetime of makeup wearing ahead of her!

Disclosure: Chris provided me with the makeup lessons for free in exchange for a fair and unbiased description of the experience.

Introducing: Cut Crease Eye Contour Brush. Free Zoom Lesson W/Purchase

It  is always exciting to teach a makeup artist a new trick.

I just learned one and it is thanks to this brush.

Truth be told I have known about this brush for a long time.

As an instructor of makeup, I reserved its use for only professional training and use.

I thought its usage to be overwhelming when I teach makeup to the non-professional.

Wrong.

I recently started showing and teaching with the Cut Crease Brush.

To my amazement, everyone took to it immediately.

In many cases people found it easier and more practical than the traditional Eye Contour Brush.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 318ced155018318c5ca4d77519dd302a.jpg

Perfect example of both a cut crease contour and wedge eye liner.

Advantages of a Cut Crease Brush:

Opens any eye to make it appear larger.

Ideal for Deep-Set eyes.

Delivers a more crisp and clean eye contour effect.

Apparently easy-to-use.

Want to learn how to use this brush?

Purchase this Brush ($12) and receive a

Complimentary Zoom Cut Crease Brush appointment.

We will meet via Zoom.

I will teach you how to use this brush for free!

Your free Zoom lesson appointment applies to all Cut Crease Brush purchases made in May 2020.

Your free lesson may be redeemed any time in the future.

I am offering free 30 minute Zoom makeup consultations.

I am happy to help you with your Zoom face.

Below is my last post to get you prepared for your Fine Tune Your Zoom Appointment.

10 Tips For Your Best Zoom Face (Only 1 Tip Is Makeup)

Since many of us are using Zoom (or any video conference equivalent) more these days, these tips will help share the best you.

1- Eye Level

Get the camera of your device eye level or slightly higher than eye level.

This eliminates the focus on your chin and neck area and instead draws easier focus to your eyes.

2- Use Front Light

This means light directly facing you.

If Zooming during the day, sit facing a window. Avoid direct sunlight on your face.

With video. The more light the better so light it up.

Light to avoid is overhead, side, and backlight.

Over head light casts shadows downward on your face and may create a drawn and fatigued appearance.

Side light (unless balanced with equal light on both sides) creates a light/dark moody appearance to your face.

Common example is there is a window to the side of you. That light will draw a shadow across the side of your face furthest from the window and split how others see you.

Back light creates a darkened silhouette of your appearance. The thing we see least is you.

3Angle Your Chair

By turning your knees 45 degrees away from the camera, your head will naturally turn towards the shoulder opposite from where your knees are facing.

This will give a light angle to your face to the camera and cut a more flattering video image.

4- Virtual Social Distance

Think of it as virtual social distance. Unless you need to have your face close to the camera, stay back 3 feet from the camera. It is distracting when anyone’s face is pushed up to the camera.

5- Head Height

Position your camera so the top of your head just touches or is slightly below the top frame of your video image.

On camera, any space above your head is superfluous and takes away from others seeing just you.

6- Postures

Good posture reads immensely on camera. If your chair promotes a more slumped posture, put a pillow between your lower back and the chair to prop you up.

There is also the psychology of your posture. The person who is sitting up appears more active in the conversation. It reads authoritative, alert  and ‘reporting to duty’.

The person who leans back into the chair with one arm laying on the table appears calm, confident, and not a threat. Their posture is still good and they appear relaxed.

7- Accesories

While jewelry is flattering, don’t let it get the attention. Posts or small, non-dangly earrings are best.

Longer dangling jewelry is distracting and can look mysterious on others monitors. Earrings can either mirror ball light or temporarily visually disappear from the viewer on their monitor. All of this accessory activity can be a big distraction.

Necklaces, unless blinking or super big, tend to not get in the way of people seeing you.

8- Your Good Side

Some may already know what side they like best and are encouraged to use it on camera.

If you are not sure you have a good side, let’s make one.

Foreheads can be distracting on camera. Their curved shape and placement make foreheads supreme light reflectors. Here are ways around that.

If your hair can cover your forehead then use it.

Hair creates a border above the eyes so others see your eyes better as they are framed.

If you have bangs, let them cover as much forehead as possible. If your hair is longer, sweep hair sideways across your forehead and turn the sweeping hair towards the camera.

If your hair is parted on the side, make sure the part is away from the camera.

And don’t forget good ole’ translucent or HD powder to control shine. More on that in a minute.

9- Clothing

Try to wear solid color instead of prints. Designate a light jacket or sweater as your Zoom shell to wear when on camera. Any color is fine. Avoid solid white or black on camera. Color is more interesting and flattering.

It is easy to see here how solids versus patterns makes a difference.

10- Makeup (finally).

My mantra for makeup is ‘Reduce the Distractions, Enhance the Attractions’.

Makeup shows people where to look and where not to look.

This mantra applies directly to the advice for all the aspects of video conferencing. It also applies to your makeup as well.

Good news- Most of us do not have an HD camera built into our device we use for a video conference. This means that a little too much concealer or powder (examples) will not read as a distraction on camera.

Here is what matters: Eyes & Lips.

Help people see and hear you better.

Focus Points For On Camera Makeup

Links are provided for video tutorials and product suggestion.

Eyes

Well groomed and shaped brows.

A clean eye lid. This means using corrector to neutralize natural fatigue looking darkness on the eye lid.

Clean and precise eyeliner for both top and bottom eye line.

A clean mascara look.

Skin

Darkness and puffiness/hollowness under the eyes neutalized with correctors.

A lightweight foundation or powder.

Mattify with powder the Heart of your face.

Lips

Stain the lips with color (lip pencils work great) to create color separation from your lips so your lips stand apart from your face.

If using gloss, only on center pillow of the lips, not all the lip.

Contour/Blush

As cameras tend to flatten our appearance, contour and blush are immensely helpful.
