Skin Care Product Focus: Toners

What are toners and why do we want to use them?

a toner

In classic European skin care philosophy, toner is a watery formula positioned to be the catalyst between cleanser and moisturizer. It gently follows up the cleansing and prepares the skin to accept serums and moisturizers better.

Toner is traditionally smoothed over skin on a cotton pad and more recently also comes in a spray delivery system to mist on the skin.

Toner’s importance is often under-represented and misunderstood.

It is a subtle yet highly effective way to attract and keep serums and moisturizers in the skin. This is achieved by the use of humectants. Humectants act as a sponge and attract and maintain the moisture it can absorb.

Toner, when misted on, provides a nice ‘slip’ so lotions and creams glide smoothly over the skin to penetrate more deeply and evenly.

Makeup Gourmet features 2 ‘Toners’. Quotes are used as one is more a rehydrating mist to use throughout the day, however works on the same principle.
